Due to my increasingly busy life, I'm going to be taking my leave from Nerd until things calm down.

I've had a good time playing on S. I was lucky enough to witness a lot of crazy drama, amazing clan rivalries and meet some great people. Although I have always been awful at PvP, it was still fun trying to rek some of you scrubs.

Thanks to all you past and present players for making the game fun. Especially, Hamsale, Emery17, Mrg, Diz, rtr, Tharine, n00ble, pkome, buchanamanaman, prebenmar, sir noob, chewsonthemove, IDANUB, uni0, tornadohorse, aboov, mumberthrax and all the rest of you that are escaping my memory at the moment. You probably know who you are anyway.

Ok, so here's a new game:

GOOGLE IMAGE WAR

Google image war is played by posting an image which can 'beat' the previous poster's image, in combat or otherwise. For example, poster 1 can post a picture of a handgun and poster 2 can post an image of a bullet proof vest. The, poster 3 can post a flamethrower, which beats poster 2's image. It does not necessarily have to beat poster 1's image, as long as it can trump the previous poster.

So load up Google Images and get started!

Rules are simple:

1. We start at 1 and increase the count by one with each post.

2. The goal is to get the count as high as possible

3. No double posting

4. If a mod, cadmin, padmin, sadmin, eadmin, headadmin, techadmin, or some future type of staff posts, ~~the count resets back to one~~ then the mods get to see how low they can go, starting from -1. See which team can get the longest chain =D

5. You may include a message with your number, or you can just post a number

6. Admins/mods, please be hilarious =D

*NEW* 7. Since admins/mods are so active, you guys can do the opposite: How low can you count before a member posts? Similar rules as above, but begin your chains at -1 and go down

Example:

Person A: 1

Person B: 2

Person A: 3

Person C: 4

Dumbo52: lol nope

Person B: fuuuuuuuu... 1

I have seen this played on other forums and I haven’t spotted it here so far. Tell me if it has already been played here and I haven’t seen it.

Basically, the first person will say a name:

‘Pete’

Then, the next person has to say another name that starts with the same letter the last one ended with:

‘Ella’

And it just carries on from there. Here’s a full example.

Player one:
George

Player two:
Evelyn

Player three:
Nancy

Player four:
Yvonne

etc.

Please help me understand why the server(s) need to restart so frequently.

The understanding I have is that there is some technical issue at hand, and if the servers are not restarted then we start to get problems, e.g. server lag or slowness, or perhaps the server becomes unstable. I don't know what that issue is. It just seems that there is one, otherwise we wouldn't need to restart nearly so often.

It sounds like there is a memory leak somewhere, or perhaps the system is not performing garbage collection correctly, or is not otherwise managing memory correctly, resulting, over time, in an escalating probability of disaster (the Architect is one of my favorite Matrix characters) in the form of unplayable lag, or outright server crashes. We definitely don't want those. But if that's the case, wouldn't the better long-term solution be to identify and fix that problem? Or contact the Bukkit developers, or plugin developers, and work with them to develop a stable solution?

Please don't get me wrong. The nerd.nu Minecraft community and game is a lot of fun. I'm really glad you're online and I hope you stay online for a lot of years to come. I just find that the restarts are a little disruptive and immersion-breaking, and I would like to understand what is going on that makes them necessary for the good of everyone — for plainly they are. Understanding really is the answer to a lot of problems, and I think this situation is no different. I definitely do appreciate that you are actively doing something to deal with the issue, regardless of what your solution is.

With that in mind, what technical issue(s) do the restarts aim to solve? What are the barriers to a more long-term, stable solution that doesn't require them? Help me understand that.

Subreddit CSS Overhaul

So i've been spending time fixing things on the subreddit stylesheet and out of frustration of having to !important everything to negate 10 previous lines of code i decided to attempt to replicate our style sheet (with some improvements) from scratch.

I've got a test sub set up, take a look, let me know what i've missed so i can work out how to fix it. For now i've tried to stick as close to what we currently have as i can, but change isnt bad so if you think of something we can do better let me know.

The biggest change is the server dropdowns at the top. and the fact that the stylesheet goes from 3911 lines to 815 lines :P
