If anyone has an interest in discussing such a feature for either of the other two servers, please open a separate thread so we can keep things better organised. The nature and usage of LWC is a little different on all three servers, so discussion pertaining to one will not correctly apply to all.

On behalf of Survival, sorry we took over the last thread

This seems like a change that would better help the server when it came to new players and the occasional mess up. There have been many instances where a player logs on and finds their chest has been stolen from. The player than continuously asks in chat about where their stuff is, who took it, and then demands for justice. Many new players might not fully understand how LWC works, and therefore not lock their chests and other belongings. These new player can become angry at the situation or angry that someone did this to them and choose to play elsewhere. Changing a small feature could have the ability to keep players on the server. If they stayed long enough, they could possibly end up doing great things and could be a positive role member for future new players. If we could change one small thing in order to lock a chest and prevent extra drama from appearing, I believe it would be a great feature on the server.

I'm in favor of auto-locking, but I'll play devil's advocate for a bit and list the potential cons I can think of:

1. Would make it easier to spam lwc-locked chests, producing grief that needs an admin to remove lwc. If our lwc database gets pruned regularly, we can disregard this point.

2. Making quick shared or communal chests is a little more hassle: have to /cremove then /cpublic. This might confuse friends playing on pve for the first time (although the more prevalent cognate problem of ignorance of /cprivate is more pervasive and pressing).

Personally I wouldn't be too fond of this feature, but I can see its usefulness to new players, and the lazy alike.

If this was to be added, I think a switch to turn off the feature should also be added to cater to more people (If it's even possible to do that).

For the most part, community chests these days are /cmodify r:regionname.  There are public chests but they are less common than shared private.

There is no per-user customisation of LWC automatic locking.  Ask yourself though, how many of your chests are not locked or are /cpublic?

I think it'd be a good thing overall. yeah, you have the possibility of more LWC grief, specifically in the beginning of the rev when everybody and their aunt logs in, but once that is cleared up, in my (definitely not completely knowledgeable) opinion it would be worth it over the course of the three months, assuming at least 2-3 active admins. It might be an issue for times when we're down an admin (like right now) and having the additional adminreqs would be unhelpful.

Regarding my first point, though, as a mayor of a major town, we'll probably just recommend that all chests placed in a public area are /cpublic ed unless they specifically wish them to be private. Hopefully that kind of thing could keep the adminreqs down a bit?

As long as the change is made public and is perhaps made a revolving purple in-game server message that tell people that chests are now auto-locked I believe that this will be a positive change and will be welcomed by the community.  You will probably get more questions about "How do you unlock/modify this chest" and a whole lot less "Someone stole all my shit out of my chest".  The second one will probably cause a lot more rage quit by new players than the ones that will get upset about a locked chest.

I wasn't to found of the idea at first. Because I do like to place a chest down during projects for anyone.

But Totemo is right

Ask yourself though, how many of your chests are not locked or are /cpublic?

The amount of times I place a chest for myself or for a few others is far greater than the amount of times I leave it open.

I can just as easily do /cremove

I cannot speak about the mod/admin side, but it does sound like it can cause more of a pain in fixing grief.

If it can't be optional per-player, then I don't think it's a good idea. If it could be, that'd be great.

Reasoning: I think that the extra confusion it'll cause to new players outweighs the convenience. I know it's a pain to remember to lock them, and indeed to lock a room-full (I did discover /cpersist yesterday, which helps) - but I think the negative side outweighs the positive.

Just an opinion.

Yesterday I did modreq #646:

  • 646 PanickedPacman need chest protected

This is far from the first one of these I've seen or dealt with.  Even with regular server messages, people are confused about how to lock their chests.  This will eliminate that confusion.

Other chest protection reqs:

  • 595 zach382 mass protect chests for me if possible
  • 298 m79specialist I need my chest, furnace, and dungeon protected please. Thank you! :D
  • 297 Herbrin3 someone took *all* the potions out of this chest (and prob the one above)? (wait you're not in favour of automatically locked chests? >.<)
  • 12 Roboman00 Locking my chests so i cannot remove them (someone else locking this guy's unlocked chests)

And by my count there are 1.5 out of 2 P admin votes in favour of this.  Are we waiting for someone else or has the go-ahead been given?

I can see it from both sides but i believe overall it would be a good thing to have.

And i dont know if it'd help with new players questions, but can /help be displayed the first time you log in? I dont even know what it shows now but the current /help is bright and could include information about the auto locking. just an idea

I'm all for this!  I'd also like to propose that the default lock be of the region that the chest is currently in, although I'm sure it may cause confusion for newbies ("what's a region locked chest?").

LWC doesn't have an option to do that.  For the shared materials chests of towns it might be useful, but for individuals within towns it would suck, since everyone in the town could access your private chests.

Yeah, I suppose such a thing would be more convenient for myself and longer-term players, and it just clicked that the goal here is to protect new players, not force them to learn LWC.  Motion retracted!

I have seen this work well before on other servers, specifically ones I help maintain, and it really is more pros then cons in this case.  The LWC spam is a problem not usually seen, and people feel more comfortable around putting things in chests.
