  1. Quick issue I'd see: traveling by the nether causes the server to load/unload a smaller number of chunks than by overworld (seeing as the nether:overworld ratio is 1:8, you travel a smaller distance, and the server does less work). P has had lag issues all rev, I wouldn't want to attempt something that could possibly cause it to get worse. Otherwise, I'd be in favor of it.

Another thought: S does portals slightly differently. I'm not thinking the normal road portals, just the 'secret' portals that were at +-800/+-800 last rev. Could be interesting to leave portals open and available, but not allow people to build within some distance from the portal. Just an idea though.

  2. I was going to write a fairly long post, but after reading fazaden's post this morning. I entirely agree with what he stated. +1

EDIT - Modified version of what I had posted on the subreddit:

    • I'd like to see moderator and admin nominations/voting return. Moderators are first nominated by the community and/or staff, admins by the (current) moderation team. Voting for all places should then be done by the community. As we are just that - a community - I feel the decisions should be left there. (I don't say this to bash our current moderation or admin team, I just feel that leaving decisions in the hands of a very limited number of people sometimes can cause issues, including people throwing the 'nepotism' word around)

  3. Thrawn stated she was working on a thread to bring all of the issues presented up. I'm going to assume the admins won't just sweep this under the carpet, and that said forum post will be posted soon. I think I said all that I needed to on the subreddit.

  4. I kind of like the random portal distribution the way it is, so I'm not a huge fan of changing it.

One thing that might be interesting is if we end up expanding the map later on, that a few new portals could be placed in the frontier to search for. It would hopefully recreate that new rev feel and get people exploring more in those areas. I also think it'd encourage new towns to pop up and claim those portals, giving them a chance to grow after all the start of rev portals are claimed by the larger towns.

  5. I thought I'd make a quick post about the changes I've made to clanchat (Obligatory "I am not a mod/techadmin/whatever").

Public and secret channels have been implemented. Anyone can join a public channel without an invite, and only members of a secret channel can see other members. These 'flags' can be set by typing /clanchat flags <channel> <secret/public> <true/false>. For example, to set channel #zifnabRocks to be public, type "/clanchat flags zifnabRocks public true".

Channels can now be deleted. Please note - this is irreversible, and can only be done by the owner. Type /clanchat delete <channelName>, followed by the confirmation code that appears (/clanchat confirm delete).

Textcolor can now be set for channels.

Owners can no longer leave channels. They must first set another user as owner first.

  6. Hello Kind Sir,

First of all, I hope your pet mudkip is doing well. Oh you don't have one? Well do I have an offer for you!

According to MCBouncer, I had requested a study ban until Tomorrow. However, I will send you one (1) pet mudkip, soon (see note), as an act of thanks in helping me pass my finals, and for removing this ban a few hours early.

He is a kind pet. However, he only eats the finest caviar. And snakes. He loves snakes. This could be an issue, especially if you have pet fish or snakes.

He also enjoys humping things. Not sure how to fix this...

Anyways, can I possibly be unbanned? Thanks!

(Note: Soon is a trademark of Blizzard Entertainment. Soon does not imply any particular date, time, decade, century, or millenia in the past, present, and certainly not in the future. "Soon" will arrive some day, I however cannot guarentee that "soon" will be here before your death, or even the end of time.)

  7. There is a castle by the  +800 -800 portal that does an amazing job with these. I'll leave the trap up to you to find, but I thoroughly enjoyed dying a few dozen times trying to get around said trap.

That being said - if it was an arena floor, I'd feel differently. I would refuse to fight anyone there.

  8. Maybe it needs to be talked to among the mods then. Not picking on anyone specifically, but:

Those are just in the past week. (The boat/cow incident if anyone is curious is here: http://nerd.nu/archives/index.php?p=/discussion/19629/mattbird-socarch26. I'm probably biased, as I've known Mattbird for years)

I have a bookmark folder on my laptop containing bans that I felt after reading were for 'minor' issues, however that laptop is at home (and I am not). I understand I don't know 'everything' in most of these cases, but I believe it has been an issue.

    Thanks

  9. I'm going to preface this post with: I've been thinking about how to say this since last night without stepping on toes. It might not happen. Sorry.

After following our ban appeal forum for a few months, I've noticed one huge pattern: New people get banned for their first *minor* offence. Oh, you didn't replant crops? 2-5 day ban, depending on the moderator. You killed a cow because you were in a protected area and couldn't get out without place a boat to jump on (one of my all time favorites)? 48 hours. Some sort of inappropriate langauge? Gone.

If I was looking for a server and I recieved a 24-48 hour ban (or longer) for something minor, like killing an animal (which, in vanilla minecraft is totally acceptable), or not replanting crops, or even because I used the wrong word and someone found it offensive, I wouldn't hesitate to leave and never bother coming back. I entirely understand banning for large infringements (Ie, you destroyed 1500 blocks of someone's creation just because you could, x-raying).

According to MCBouncer, we have had 4,356,056 connections since using it. Averaging roughly 1,000 connections per day. However, at the same time, we have roughly 95,000 bans (25 bans per page, ~3800 pages). I'm not going to bother figuring out how many bans this is per day, or how many connections/person (however, some of the more active users have a few thousand connections. I myself have 800ish, some of the staff are close to 7000).

It might not be my place to say this, but i feel as though our system of "Ban for anything minor, they'll appeal if they want to come back" is actually quite damaging to this server, and this community. I however do not have the power to fix this, but I would like to make a suggestion (wanted or not):

Warn people. Use the note system built into MCBouncer to do so. Send them a mail in game, and place a note on their account stating "Minor crop grief, warned (date)". "Homophobia, warned it will not be tolerated again (date)".

    tl;dr: read it.

Edit - I'd like to state I am not questioning our staff, but simply the guidelines that have been put in place for them to follow.

  10. We used to have that exact one. One day it was disabled I assume because of resources.

Dynmap is much more resource intensive. The chat feature is nice, but anonymous users can use it to spam chat (last time I used it, it was difficult to ban people from using the chat on the map). The map cache can be set up to not automatically update and can be updated with a command at a certain interval (close to how ours is set up).

Chat? Frick, it shows armor and health as well.

Regarding resource intensive, if the game state is cached every 5 seconds, and any client polls to it reads from the cache, it shouldn't be too bad.

Edit: Just thought of it: why not havea client dedicated to the task? Have a Minecraft client that runs on the carto server and have it receive all activity on the server. That way, the game server only has to handle an additional client, and if resources pemits, the carto server can render everything live and show the location of players, etc. I'm not familiar with the Minecraft game protocol, so I don't know what scope of information a client receives, but if neccesary there could be a plugin that sends all available data to a client with a specific IP and name.

Technically, the server already outputs chat logs to a file (see http://nerd.nu/logs, possibly slightly broken right now)
