That obsidian cube could work, Depends if there would be enchantments allowed and how long people would want a game to last. Right now I would maybe guess 1 game to last 1 hour depending if enchantments are enabled or not.

Using the Nexus idea I was thinking why not have life support as the goal to destroy. It could have its own room in every teams spawn space station. If you break the other teams life support it causes the air to turn into what is it like outside the space stations making you lose air and start to suffocate. As for what block could be represented as life support I'm not sure of that yet but maybe not even a block maybe a mob with some potion buffs making it harder to kill.

Imo I feel like this would further the difficulty to find players. I know I stay near spawn so I don't have to run 1000 blocks back to my base and with beds I feel like a lot more players will just go far out and it will become harder to find players to fight. I'm all about the PvP'ing and its hard enough to find players to fight and just don't want the challenge to rise if not needed. I think Survival is just fine with out beds. It adds more of a challenge to it.
