  1. Don't ask "would it" ask "could it"

Since it could, the relatively small effort will be worth it to make even if it brings in just one more player, because one player is one person spreading the word of how awesome our servers are to their friends, or at least another person playing the game on our servers and enjoying their time.

On a similar note - there's been little more than major news only on the twitter account, do we want to use that more? I'm rather out of the scene now but I assume there are other areas that NerdNu already has presence but it's quiet?

  2. I have to agree with Pilotbear on this one.

No interiors? Not to call builds out, but exteriors aren't all that if the interior doesn't look good. It matters a lot.

Can confirm, I'm happy with my interior and not the exterior. So the whole thing isn't what I wanted. I'll work with someone else next time.

  3. One recommendation I remember from pre worldedit times was that big flat builds (eg pixel art before we had a region for that) were best done over ocean. Donvito you appear to have built 80% over land, how did you choose that location? A quick scan of the pre expanded world map suggests that there was nowhere where you'd be entirely over water but many places where you'd be partially.

  4. Some of these builds could be called terrain ignoring. I asked in chat earlier and it seems one of the main benefits to making terrain ignoring builds in terrain is to be overllooked by neighbours. We might as well have a flatland area/world for that and just build the hills ourselves where we want them. It'd free up the actual generated terrain to be used in terrain-relevant ways.

Is it possible to measure how much of the world has been claimed? I was flying around the eastern side of the world and I met very little unclaimed land (more so by /rg i than sight, but understandable at this point in the rev).

Render distance is a real limit. It seems absurd to build single things that can't be seen all at once except on the cartograph. I'm also not understanding the appeal of some identikit towns or huge cities with 100x100x100 buildings I've seen.

edit: Each to their own, no doubt about that. But I was meaning more preserving the one world/areas with generated terrain.

  5. How about a hard claim and a soft claim. You start off your mega build in a 300x300 but there's a 500x500 area that is reserved for you if you make considerable use of the 300x300 within two weeks? And these aren't permitted bordering spawn.

I'm not keen on entire landmasses belonging to one person, or someone who is known to possibly fill a 500x500 using most of it untouched and only a build in the centre. I prefer to permit them, but suggest that they aren't done.

    • the survival server closes because of bad gameplay and lack of players
    • server reopens in 1.9, change name from S to PvP, but do nothing different to gameplay for why server originally closed
    • players complain about the fact nothing changed and start to lose interest, but are told changes are going to happen
    • rev 2 comes out and still nothing is changed and the server dies faster than it ever has before
    • I try and explain why it dies and how to fix it along with getting community input
    • no pvp staff takes part in the conversation
    • end result is to give up on the server and let it close again instead of addressing the underlying issues why it failed the first time and then failed again

i can't believe the PvP admins gave up on it so quickly and the Heads didn't seem to step in and do anything about it.

makes me sad again to see the server die when it wasnt really given a chance to succeed in the first place.

I would still like to develop a real PvP based server if given the opportunity and if it comes to costs for the resources I wouldn't mind funding it.  I felt like there was good feedback on here and I would rather try something new and it fail then to completely give up on it.

    • A server closes because of lack of players. Would you want it to happen any other way?
    • It reopened as vanilla 1.9 based on requests, but the requesters did not turn out to enjoy what they chose enough to stick with it. Nothing wrong there, but it shows that even when we get what we want we still get bored of it.
    • Players asked for no change, got bored of it, the admins were the first to come up with something concrete enough to try and so they did. How could that go any better?
    • I wouldn't have made a new rev and I've forgotten why it was done.
    • You do try, but you start with "I was extremely let down by the staff" which I would call a bad way to start
    • Based on previous conversations I'm not surprised they didn't enter
    • The underlying issue is that a few people state weak intent to play but don't actually play. The underlying issue is that Minecraft isn't as fun as it used to be, however it's dressed or modded up.

We may not want this situation, but once we are here there is nothing sensible to do but close. I also have ideas on what the server could be but none of them are worth trying in this situation.

  6. How it could be abused? People have a target and will kill them regardless of penalty. I lived being the target.

I'm not going to be going into detail on this yet again, I just repeat the topic that doesn't get dealt with - culture. It is the (or one of) answer to your question but I recommend we don't go any further with it.
