  1. I can't fault people for wanting an active in-game admin as certainly not everyone who plays on S is necessarily active here, the subreddit, or elsewhere in the community outside the game. I didn't really give too much thought to it when I accepted the position, my priority was to help the team do something great with some of the ideas I had seen and discussed with the other admins, mainly Mumber. I'd say my S ingame activity isn't a huge priority, as my ingame activities are focused elsewhere when I play MC. I would rather not just sit semi-afk at spawn while doing other things just to rack up hours on the usage scale. I think that's unhelpful and dishonest about my intentions. As to the future, I have every intention of playing on S if we get this new revision off the ground, which I certainly have high hopes for. I suspect we'll suffer some stumbles and need to tweak stuff as we go, but I'll be there to experience it alongside the other players.

    Thanks for the responses Aca!

  2. I'm simply trying to address the concern that some feel that to contribute to S I have to be an active player on it with (varying) hours of time in per day or week or other metric that has been chosen. Do my responsibilities to my build on P outweigh spending time designing/building stuff for/on S? Yes. Do they outweigh the time spent working on new revision plans and other S admin concerns? No. The effort I'm putting into discussing stuff with the other S admins and working on our new revision plan has very little to do with the time I spend building stuff in-game, especially when I started the city project months ago.

Okay cool, thanks for the response. I just have one follow up question for you, and I will leave you be :P

You say that you have a pretty good handle on the Survival community. If so, you must have known that the predominately Survival users were extremely vocal in wanting an admin that was active in game. Was this something you considered before you accepted this position? Is it something that is a priority for you now as an admin? I can understand prior commitments, I'm looking towards the future here.

  3. The first thing I will address is the negative reaction from people regarding myself being chosen as the new admin for S given that I haven't played there in a while and many people don't know who I am. Many have asked why I'm not now actively playing on S; to which the simple answer is that I'm still building a portal city on P, mostly alone, and that is an obligation I cannot simply drop.

What I am getting from this is that you are currently too busy with P to dedicate time to S. Or did I just simplify this statement too much?

  4. I will contribute towards getting server staff headsets, as long as a few guidelines are put in place:

1: Staff be on mumble.nerd.nu at least 8 hours a week in reachable channels.

1a: Being in suppressed channels or being muted and deafened does not count towards this goal.

1b: Active hours should preferably match to peak active hours.

2: Microphones be used as much as possible.

2a: Text chat should be kept to as little as possible, as not to disrupt flow of conversation with late responses.

I'm serious about this. If giving a bit of money gets people talking and discussing things, then I am all for it.

I'm not sure you can expect people with jobs and other irl responsibilities to be on mumble 8 hours a day. I couldn't even do that when I was in school.

EDIT: Apparently I need to go back to school and learn how to read, 8 hours a week or close to it seems feasible. I cant say much though, as I personally hardly ever use mumble.

  5. Rust has died from a development point, and is still rather expensive for most people.

I'm really not sure why you think it has died from a developmental point. Its been changed a lot recently, and there are still more things to come. Also, its cheaper to purchase than minecraft.

This has changed semi recently. The current version of the game (that is, development - the other version is now considered "legacy", not "stable") has a server binary that is usable by anybody.

Aeoxic is correct, anyone is now able to host a rust server.

I think rust would be a good choice, its gameplay might attract some of the older members back to the nerd community. Its also a developing game, so it'd be nice to jump on it while its gaining popularity.

  6. People used to, but it's pretty much dead as updates go, and most everyone who played got sick of it quickly.

I wouldnt call it dead, there is a whole community popping up at r/playrustpublic

  7. a) That's been answered many times with: Plumped ores in pvp areas, possibly greater dungeons and spawners.

    b) For much of the reasons people use pvp arenas on P, or use S.

Which brings us back to the many times people have said, why should would change a server that is already successful on its own?

I think we've gone full circle here.

  8. My objection isn't to the mechanics per se, it's how adding the toxicity of S's culture to P's culture will be a detriment to both servers.

Well I dont like to use "toxicity" as a way to describe S's culture (solely because it has been used as an insult towards the server in the past), this is actually a very valid point. No matter how hard we try, the play style is just too contradictory between the two servers. Even those of us that don't intentionally try to cause problems will undoubtedly offend some users.

  9. Thank you gsand, for making this thread, and to those of you who have offered your suggestions. It has been up for about two weeks now so let me see if I can summarize the various suggestions from those who have posted.

    • more challenge
    • more pvp
    • more hostility and anger
    • pvp balanced by limiting acquisition of enchants and potions
    • raiding players' containers
    • limited number of protected containers
    • no enderchests
    • valuable loot (remove enchanting, enchanted books as loot)
    • A more thorough adoption of civcraft's features
    • no civcraft
    • a reason to stick around after you have a farm and the dragon is dead
    • more realistic leaderboards/pvp profiles

Did i miss any from the above comments?

I've read through this, and you seemed to have summed up the suggestions well. Nothing seems missed to me!

  11. This is weird but could we make this an actual in game system as well. Either through the plugin pixelator or brought books that can be given like /rules?

I thought it would be cool to bring it in game through books. A plugin would certainly help.

Also, I am looking to put the next issue out this upcoming Friday. Work has picked up unexpectedly, so I have not had much time on the servers so far. So any stories would greatly help!

  12. Oh would you mind posting results of FISA games? And by the way FISA opens up today.

Of course, if you or someone else could get me a list of the results, I will gladly post that. I'm looking to get the next edition out this Friday. Unfortunately I did not make it to the opening of FISA.

  13. Are you creating this with an image editing program? I can try to create another mockup with LaTeX; that might reduce the file size and standardize the format a little.

I just used photoshop to make it. Its something I'm really familiar with and I don't have anything like InDesign.
