  1. In an ideal world, option #1 would be the best, but the cons and pretty evened out with the pros. I'd personally choose option #3 since that was more or less the feeling I got when Barlimore would move my builds and adjust regions to make my project that much easier. The main problem with this is potential for a large influx of requests only to be handled by 3 people, and when it comes to land disputes, it's not a simple matter than can be gotten over with in a small amount of time. I never used W/E for the longest time and now that I've gotten a taste of what can be done with it, I'd be much more willing to use it for building purposes. especially when it comes to the projects I have a tendency of starting and not finishing.

  2. An idea a few of us have had for a while and d3north's post on the subreddit, inspired me to start a discussion on this.

It's quite apparent that a few members of the community are steadily growing more bored of Minecraft, and have moved on to playing other games. Games like, Rust, League of Legends, Garry's Mod, Team Fortress 2, etc. But we do not have a concrete system with which we can organise ourselves. The Steam Group does exist but it isn't moderated and doesn't even appear to be even be used.

It would be very convenient to add a subforum specifically for gaming, but I can see there being a few issues since this forum site is dedicated to the Minecraft servers.

I see a lot of potential in the Steam Group to notify players of events or what games are being played, but without someone to organise and moderate that, it's never going to get used.

It'd also be nice for players who have in-game groups to notify the steam page, so others can easily find out who to contact about joining.

If anyone has any other idea, please help out and contribute to the discussion.

  3. 1. The only system of trust I want is the reputation attached to ones' name. A major reason I stuck with nerd.nu when I started was that I, as a brand new player, wasn't viewed by others as worthy of any more suspicion or implicitly less worthy of joining in a project.

    2. Server activity is pretty well encapsulated in stats; newbie questions are almost always answered (and get asked) promptly in public chat; we already have a system of notes; we do sometimes have extended ban lengths for people who "should know better".

    3. "Visual representation of a player's identity" brings to mind every color of the rainbow used to tag players at various levels of trust.

    4. You say you're looking for ways for us to stand apart from other servers, yet our current system rejecting ranks or trusted groups is a great thing that sets us apart from many, many others. The only "incentive" we should have for playing on these servers is the joy of playing with friends. Becoming a moderator or an admin should not be an incentive - mods have no legitimate advantages in gameplay over that of everyone in general, only duties and the tools necessary to fulfill those duties.

First off I think you are misunderstanding the purpose of what I'm suggesting, you make it seem like I want to organise players according to their levels of trust, (something that isn't even possible to do) Wrong.

What I'm asking for uses all the methods that are currently available outside of Minecraft. Things like the usage stats, MCBouncer, and even wiki profiles, I want those things to be readily available in-game.

    1. Agreed, that is how we operate, but you must be very naive to think you weren't worthy of suspicion when you were new. New players always have a stigma surrounding them, atleast on C there have been far too many incidents of a player joining for the first time, requesting a TP, and going to town destroying stuff when it's granted. But that's never stopped me from letting them participate in any projects or such, if they actually chat with me and show me that they're up for the work, then of course I'd trust them, I've made plenty of friends through that.

    2. Again, I want those stats available in-game. And notes don't appear to be used as much as bans are (what ever happened to warning people?). Also the ban lengths no longer apply to the one being banned but the banning moderator.

    3. I feel as though you're putting me in a negative light here. I want to tag players using information that is already visible to anyone who is looking for it. If they have a bad record that is their fault, if they don't then clearly at a glance they must be more reliable.

    4. I don't even think you read my post, when did I say that the moderator position was an incentive? Quite the opposite, I said that it is not a promotion, I also stated that a lot of the newer players definitely see it as that (since that is what it is on every other server ever). My idea is to make us stand out by simply making it easy for everyone to know who you are. And yes, the server's current incentive is to play with friends, but in my personal experience, staying here has felt worthwhile when I log into the server after taking a two month break and people scream my name the moment I log in. In other words, being easily identified due to the reputation attached to my name.

  4. Having trusted users is a topic I used to ask a few admins about a while ago and it almost always came down to the "we don't use a rank system". Which is fine, whatever.

But, adding a 'trusted' user group would help in identifying players a lot easier. Specifically when dealing with things across all servers. My idea is something along the lines of some sort of tag, like an icon or symbol attached to a player's identity. The purpose being for newer players to know who to talk to if they need help (by asking players who've been around longer) or for older players to know who not to trust (since they might not be aware of the rules). This would also be useful when anything involving all the servers comes up for example, the mod vote, I always hear people complain about who half of the nominees are because they've never even heard of them. if it were easy to identify that [X] nominee has been around since [blank] date players would be more inclined to give said nominee the benefit of the doubt.

For moderators, I would assume that easily being able to identify players would make bans, kicks, mutes, etc. a lot faster. Another example, player [A] has a small history of spamming and verbal abuse (a note added by another mod in the past), moderator can quickly mute him the next time they do, since it was already noted that they were aware of the rule. Another thing that could be implemented (although I have a feeling a few won't like it) is to ban players according to how long they've been playing. Like if an older player had for some reason or another, decided to grief (or break some other rule), it should be obvious to any mod or admin that that player is well aware of the rules and knows what they're getting themselves into, set a longer ban length. As opposed to a newer player who breaks a rule and has little to no idea of what the rules are (you can't make them read them, it happens anyways) gets a much shorter ban length since, of course adopting something like a three-strike policy against them would 'motivate' them to familiarise themselves with the rules.

I don't think of this as a rank system, because it's not changing permissions or giving any said person priority, it's just a matter of adding a visual representation of a player's identity. The goal being to identify which players have been around longer and what they've done.

I'm also constantly looking for ways to help us stand out apart from other servers and being open to adding radical changes, even ones that are really minor, works in our favour, because it will generate interest, especially when it comes to advertising. Another thing, is that most servers adopt a rank system as an attempt to make money through payment, or as an incentive to continue playing on their server. Nerd doesn't have an incentive to stick around like that other than what appears to be the role of a moderator, which has been expressed in the past as not being a promotion. Which many players see it as anyways. Something as simple as being easily identified to other players would be enough of an incentive for someone to stay, without being 'better' than those who aren't.

    Feel free to discuss.

  5. Quick workaround; if you accidentally break a block, you can get it back with the pick block key, but you must then open your inventory, click on it, then put it back where it was.  If not, it will revert to white again.  This way you don't have to scroll through the inventory finding the color you need.

That's what I do, as well as simply keeping two of the same block in my hotbar, but it's still an unnecessary hassle that shouldn't be there.

  6. really dislike the idea of allowing roleplaying in general chat again. I think the current clan chat system has been working very well and the players have been pretty good about keeping those things to clan chat.

I can attest to this, I am a huge advocate for clanchat and would prefer that newer players get accustomed to using the chats. I've also been making several clanchats for a variety of topics that are completely public. I also have been trying to plan a build, "The Hall of Clanchats" which I would've like to be built close to spawn (if not in it) so new players can learn about the functions of clanchat and join any of the chats on the server, or contact the owners for an invite.Regardless, there will still be those who end up muted and immediately resume their antics after they get unmuted. Still, they shouldn't be allowed to do so.

  7. I don't even keep animals anymore because of the frustration associated with it.

    (This question applies to everyone)

Has your experience on S changed because you cannot keep animals? Are you constantly starving? Are you unable to PvP? Are you unable to survive simply because you can't fill up an extra three hunger bars?

If any of the answers above is no, then I don't really understand why you need to continue debating. Killing animals has always been allowed on S, and clearly it hasn't ruined what S is about.

If you really want to keep your animals then just build a badass base to better protect or hide them, rather than change the rules for everyone.

In regards to crops being grief-able, that may actually affect people's gameplay, S has always had a bunch of public (or easy to access) farms that make it easy to keep your health and hunger high, which in turn keeps you more prepared to fight, run away, or even explore.

Think of it this way, a person who makes an animal farm is most likely going to keep those animals for themselves, whereas a person who makes a crop farm is (usually) going to leave it easy to access so others can take from it, because they know that they will replant what's taken. So crop farms are treated more like a service and making them grief-able messes with everyone that uses that farm as opposed to an animal farm where you're griefing the sole owner.

also, not being able to kill animals means we don't get to have things like this anymore.

  8. 1. I don't really play on C that much now, and therefore don't mod so much either, because I no longer enjoyed it. If I'm looking for ease of building, other servers have worldedit, voxelsniper, etc. If I'm looking for more socialization or more challenging/functional construction, PvE better fits the bill at this moment in time.

    2. I believe a cross-server modreq check is in the works, which should help for distributing moderation load.

    3. On the subject of yes/no voting, the reason there was no "unfamiliar with" or neutral option was to mask the hard no votes from affecting interpersonal relations. I never saw the wisdom in this, since the voters who would really want to hide a hard no are generally those the nominee expects to vote yes. I'd welcome a neutral option, but expect feelings to be hurt and voters to feel socially pressured toward the neutral option.

    4. [Or] via nerd.nu/applyformod.

    1. Our own moderators are tired of C... And yet we still can't find ways to fix that? Just because they aren't leaving nerd and merely going to another of our servers. Personal question: you are good at building, what would you personally want to see out of creative since I can assume that you aren't a free to build on P due to restrictions of survival mode? (other than W/E)

    2. That sounds good, considering how convenient switching between servers has become. You wouldn't happen to know who is working on that would you?

    3. Anyone that cannot take rejection should not be who you are looking for in a moderator position. And honesty is the best policy. Worst case scenario Player A holds a minor grudge against Mod B, good, someone who does that shouldn't be a mod.

    4. Isn't nerd.nu/applyformod a joke? Or does it actually take in names?

    5. Moderators should be designated for one particular server, all mods should have status globally in case the need arises.

    6. The moderator vote is biased.

7.The Admins should decide on a moderator.

    8. I see many new people leave right away because they are frustrated with spawn. If we can get them interested in something right away, then they will stay and be dedicated to something.

    9. Advertising is good... but where is an effective place to advertise? that is not bringing in a "bad crowd"

    10. I agree we need a more interesting lobby. if there is a contest, I'm in.

    5. That is essentially what the current system is. The problem is, no one leaves their server to help out the others.

    6. Not so much biased as heavily unbalanced. (though like anything involving people, there is bias)

    7. That is what they (the Head Admins) do, but we've been discussing that the Server Admins also get to be a part of the final decision.

    8. Bardidley is referring to the way that C's spawn is set up, it's rather strange and over;y complicated and many new players log in see a bunch of dark hallways without an obvious means of escape and promptly leave. It's too late to fix Rev 25's spawn but for for future revisions, please take this into consideration.

    9. For advertisements on Reddit, and for advertisements anywhere else.

    10. Not an official contest, (yet) but there is a discussion involving the Hub server. Here.

    • Upvote 1
  9. I'd like to use roast's hub, at least as a temporary hub until the competition results are in which could be some time. It also gives us a guaranteed nice looking hub which the contest doesn't. I mean we might end up walking out of the contest with the best suggestion being a diamond block pony with gold ore ears. Not questioning building capabilities here just people might not be interested in the contest.

At you hinting at your entry?

NEVAstop had voiced some concerns that having the hub server build be a contest, since something of this scale may take some time. He had the idea that we use something that is already built.

So, for those who don't want to build, or aren't capable of it, they could enter a build that already exists that can be used (or easily reworked) as the hub.

  10. 1. By keeping our creative server as vanilla as possible, with the addition of some of our restrictions, our creative server offers NOTHING that players cant get out of other creative servers. we no longer have that "large" community feel that some people would come to the server to experience. alot of C dedicated would build on the server simply because there work would get to be viewed and enjoyed by a large user base.

    2. The flying aspect while being a fantastic building tool, allows players to spread out far to much. there is no governing force outside of the world borders that keeps players congregated together, encouraging one another to get to know there neighbor. Flying. keep it, but spawn players in survival. encourage as much as possible to be done in survival, but let players switch into flying mode for building uses.

    3. Lets get some moderates on C who know the server. as much as i appreciate mods form P and S coming around to help out, its still no substitute for a Mod who resides on the server, and moderates chat, and takes care of small issues on a personal level.

    4. ADVERTISING! lets get some players in. this has been discussed above. what will be done about it remains yet to be seen.

    5. While /randloc works, bring back /warp openspace. openspace brings new players together to a blank canvas, so they can work together or be neighbors.

    6. Lets branch out and use our subreddit more often. i often overlook ALOT of things, because i don't check the forums as frequent as reddit.

    1. I think we should just drop the "maintaining vanilla" thing, we already aren't vanilla. S has enchantism and they're constantly looking for more things to add. We've been doing the same except for us, we just get told it's not happening and leave it at that. No trial runs, nothing.

    2. I'd still like to trial no-flying, but I can definitely agree that we should have players focus on doing everything in survival mode. (brainstorm: buildmode, like modmode, but without the mod powers, used only for building)

    3. Again, MOAR MODS FOR C!

    4. For you.

    5. Sounds interesting, and I'd like to hear more about this.

    6. I'm kinda the opposite. But I would like to see more posts that are hand-in-hand with the forums, as well as more red and blue tags on the subreddit.

  11. If I'm not mistaken our old policy used to require mods to play on all of our servers, while that was a bit extreme, since it's only natural to flock to one server. It should be a requirement to learn all of the rules and commands on each server since you are expected to assist on all the servers. I would also appreciate more moderators checking up on open modreqs regardless of the server, since it is a bit ridiculous that some can go on for more than six hours for something as simple as flowing water.

How about the server admins teach new mods on each of their servers? They'd get to know them (if they don't) and basically make sure that they know the ins and outs pertaining to the server.

If it's a problem of remembering the rules and commands, why not just make a document with the basics?

  12. First off, I'd like to formally announce exactly why I "left" the servers.

As many of you may know, I had been spending an absurd amount of time playing on C, throughout many different hours of the day, whether it be building, chatting, exploring, or helping out others I was almost always on. So naturally, I was getting bored. Then the Summer Mod Vote popped up, and I found that HailSaban (who happened to be very new at the time) had been put up for nomination whereas I was not simply because I happened to not be present online when JohnAdams and Thrawn logged in to see who had been playing the most. That was disappointing, but hey, I got over it and kept playing, with everyone around me telling me I'd be a shoo-in for the next vote.

More hours, more posts, and of course more effort. At this point I had been playing so much Minecraft I was starting to get sick of it. So I gave myself an ultimatum, if I didn't get modded, I would leave. I was putting far too much effort into the server only to see absolutely nothing come out of it. The 3M meetings which Nick, Eehee, Neva and I had made ourselves because we were tired of waiting for the admins to set up a meeting for C players. The countless threads I had made and commented in. Not a single idea that anyone came up with really came into fruition. Then the October Mod Vote reared it's ugly head. If you revisit the poll, I am the only nominee that is from C. I thought I would be modded on principle, simply because I was from C and we were in desperate need of mods more than two months ago. So much for that, I didn't get the vote, I didn't want to put in any more effort for nothing.

*stretches fingers* Alright, let's get started.

    1. Here's a memory jogger: Remember the 3M meetings? A lot of people attended that, to our surprise. Run by Magnyus and Nickeox, with NEVAstop and myself running the secondary meetings, it proved to be filled with thoughtful, well spoken conversation. Dozens of suggestions were raised and none were dismissed. It was formal, it went perfectly.

Now, tell me two things that came from those meetings.

Fun fact: Nothing ever came from them. Nothing at all. If you think there's a reason to disagree with me on that, go ahead. But first, please listen to the recordings. Please don't argue if you just disagree for no reason, because the evidence here is overwhelming.

    2. It's just ridiculous, and certain admins can't bring themselves to do anything about it. Why? Because they couldn't care less. That's the honest answer.

    1. As Eehee mentions the 3M meetings were to generate discussion and ideas amongst the C players, and while our formatting was a little strange, we still managed to have fantastic discussion, unfortunately, like everything that relates to C, it's nothing but illusion. Nothing came out of it except for arguably the Hub server, (which was nickeox's idea by the way) something he wasn't even credited for. [as for the recording, I'll ask nickeox to post it later]

    2. I have a feeling that someone would say that this isn't true. But take this into account, Why does it feel that way in the first place?

    3. I don't know whether creative is beyond fixing now, but if you seriously want it to get better then you're going to have to be more open about new ideas. Ideas that originally would never have been considered on C. Us being afraid of change is why we're so behind all of the other minecraft servers. I'm not saying we've got to ditch our morals and turn to donations or anything like that, but just being a bit more open minded and working together for a better change could go a long way.

    3. At this point, I think the C players wouldn't mind any change, so long as there is change. I am also getting extremely annoyed with the excuse that "we are going to change anything", it's absurd, clearly that mentality isn't working. Like Tornado, I am also not saying that we drop everything and start offering ranks, and perks to donaters, etc. I'm merely saying that we should be free to discuss and act upon any changes we may come to an agreement on.

    4. What we need, at the moment, is to find new source of players (specifically for C, and for the servers in general). The only way to accomplish doing so is to advertise, and not to make a contest out of doing it. While a nice idea, it's not an effective method for it, and in my eyes seems to only be a delaying method for actually advertising.

4a. -A more interesting, less-barren, easier to embrace Lobby spawn should be constructed. Now.

4b. -Direct connection IPs should not be posted outside of the game. While a nice convenience, we want new players to see everything we have to offer, and not just jump into what they think they will enjoy. By forcing a player through the Lobby world, we will present all our options to them, which might otherwise go unnoticed. Direct connection IPs should be posted in the spawn of each individual servers, along with signs advertising the other servers.

    4. I'm going to be frank, Denevien's reply to my post on the Advert thread felt as though it was brushed off. I agree with Rock that the advertisement issue should not be a contest, and rather something a bit more organised. I asked if we could be informed with the process of how we'll be advertising and was simply given a childish and silly response in return.

4a. This, on the other hand, should be a contest. Because it involve the community a lot more than advertising does, and yes, the current hub server looks terrible. But it's nice to see that this issue is being handled with already.

4b. Agreed, the Hub server should serve as an introduction to what each server has to offer, like a sort of museum. Any new players should always start off in the hub server so that they can at least sample a little bit of each server and then decide for themselves which one they'd like to go to.

    5. Mods

I completely agree that this is an issue.  We don't have ANY active C mods.  Looking through the modreq list, marting and I alone combine for more than 50% of the modreqs. The way to solve this is to get new mods.  Unfortunately, our voting process hinders this.  We have 2 maybe 3 mods who play C a couple times a week, and 4 admins.  When a C person is up for nomination, those 6-7 votes aren't nearly enough.  While some people vote yes because they know C needs mods or they know them from another server, it helps, but still C players are easily the lowest on the list for nominations. If we expect everyone to get a certain percentage when 70% of voters don't play on C, it's going to be extremely tough.  Ultimately it is the head admins' choice, but I believe that the distribution of mods and the need of mods should factor in to their decision.

    6. The community

I think we all can agree that C has a bit of a community problem.  I think that the only cure for Creative is the playerbase.  As an admin I do everything I can to promote a better community.  I've really tried to put an emphasis on having things other than the traditional "lets build together". But in the end everything myself and the other admins do only goes so far, it is up to the larger community to attend those events, tell people about the servers, and make C a great place.  The community isn't fixed by the efforts of few, it's going to take everyone.

    7. Lobby

I agree that the lobby needs to change.  It's not my call but waiting for a "contest" to design it could take months.  Just pick a build.

    5. Nick and I recently made a list of all the mods that are currently active consistently on C. We only counted about 3, and we were being generous. We counted about 25 give or take for PvE, and 10 or so for S. That is absolutely pathetic, 3 mods should not be in charge of C at all times. C NEEDS MODS. I don't think this can be expressed any more than it already has.

    6. Too true, unfortunately it isn't only going to take C's (practically non-existant) community, but also the other two servers. And I'm going to be honest, we don't exactly see eye-to-eye with PvE.

    7. *cough*shamelessselfplug*cough* I could offer that Mira's design be easily reworked as a Hub. I have a few other ideas as well.

    8. Players are nominated - Discussion in private - Heads decide from discussion which names go forward  - Public vote - Heads decide who gets selected. If so, what is the point in the final stage? Why can't the people who get more yes votes than no be selected, rather than having the heads pick through the names again?

    9. I'm really curious as to why Magnyus didn't get it last round along with several other players who should've been there. Without meaning to take this too off topic, I don't think it should be ultimately the heads' choice. Allow the final choice to come down to the vote.

    10. Also, think about editing the voting options. Rather than having 'Yes' or 'No' where the no also includes not knowing the player well enough, add a 'Neutral' or 'Don't know player' option. With there being so few mods playing on C, they're unlikely to know the players, so the players will get a straight no, limiting their chances further. I've brought this up with a couple of staff members before and got a mixed response, but I think it'd make the vote fairer and increase the amount of C players getting past the voting stage.

    8. Picking whoever has more yes votes than no puts all the PvE players at a huge advantage. And that is essentially the system we're using right now anyways. Unless of course they do add the "Don't Know Player" option, then a lot of those "No's" will be "Don't Know's".

    9. You and me both Torn, you and me both. (and everyone else)

    10. MCP pls. This should just be a standard, why it wasn't implemented in the first place, I have no idea.

    11. I hope people can trust us when we say that there is a valid reason for it.

    12. Regarding your second point, we kept away from that, because we didn't think it fair to the player to be posted up in public, just to have a NO thrown at them by someone. Now, recently we've changed it so that we ask the player if they want to be on the voting, and make sure to mention that it doesn't always mean they will make mod. Since they are agreeing to being there, maybe this is something we can revisit for next round.

    11. Apologies, but I don't trust you, because the head admins decision went against what every single person I talked to told me. They were all disappointed when they found out I wasn't voted.

    12. I think this is rather senseless, a nominee should automatically be someone who can handle rejection. I would prefer a straight up "No" a thousand times over than not being told anything. Also any No's can open up the possibility for a player to make amends with whoever said no.

    13. [We're] in desperate need of more moderators. While people's concerns about players should certainly play a role in the selection of moderators, I hope that the heads will be able to take into account the fact that most "NO"s are from moderators who are unfamiliar with a certain candidate -- and for Creative candidates, that's the majority of the staff.

    14. I don't necessarily think our system of choosing moderators needs to be change, but I'd like to make sure the final selection is fair to everyone.

    15. Additionally, I agree that the lobby could benefit from a facelift. Including universal rules on sign boards and building an area that looks a lot nicer would be a good start. I'm not sure why the details of the contest haven't been posted yet or what FatherSouth's build looks like, but if its better than our current lobby, I don't see the harm in replacing it.
