  1. It's a bit late now, but I really think C players would get a kick out of building CTF maps, and then simply act as observers during the actual CTF. Would it be possible to rig something up where we have players register on the forums to be map builders, we'd evaluate whether we think they are qualified builders. Then they'd get perms to join the building of the CTF map, but then be limited to only being observers during the actual event, to see how their builds work out? It would be very much like a community build, but one hosted on an independant map.

    Event Base Contest!

There's been a good amount of interest in a future Zombie Survival Event, with the possibilities of players becoming mobs and different effects based on day and night cycles. While the event isn't set in stone yet, I think the theme would make a fantastic month-long building contest, and the possibility that the best designs may be used in future events will motivate you!

So here is the challenge, build us a base that would be ideal as the starting defensive location of a Zombie Survival Event.

    Rules:

    1. It must include 2 separated areas (labled with a sign): Spawn point (e.g. Helipad) & HQ location (i.e. if this area is overrun the game ends)
    2. The build must be built by you, or your team (you cannot enter someone else's build into the contest).
    3. The build must fit within a 100x100x100 cube.
    4. The build must be built during the duration of the contest (no reusing past builds).
    5. Once you've completed your build, make a post here with the coordinates and a pretty picture or two to be considered.
    6. Multiple entries are allowed.

Don't be afraid to be detailed and (dam)age your buildings. Expect that during an event players will have fun fixing and reinforcing the structure.

You can make this come from any timeline; past, present, or future.

I expect we'll see a number of hospitals, churches (with graveyards!), and military installations.

On July 28, after 4pm, the contest will close and I will consider the entries, and post a poll of the top 5, on which the community will vote for which is the best!

  3. I might caution the placing of block 95, as nothing prevents players from putting a piston next to it, turning it into the trap which was the reason we banned it in the first place.

For the same reason, if it hasn't been done yet, I would recommend removing any block 95 that has already been placed.

  4. What the upvote/downvote does is allow people to feel they are contributing to a discussion. The more ways we have to give people a way to contribute, no matter how small, the better I say. I feel like I will be spamming people's posts with simple assent/dissent comments, but don't have another avenue anymore. I really think the pros outweigh the cons here. So from the discussion above I've gathered what I think we all consider the pros and cons to be below:

    Pros:

-Removes clutter from simple assent/dissent comments.

-Get's members who are less vocal to contribute in some way to discussions.

-A quick easy way to gauges reaction to an opinion without a formal poll

    Cons:

-takes up space on the page (about 1%)

-Annoying fore people who have difficulty clicking nearby buttons by mistake.

-Does not encourage less vocal members to become more vocal.

Did I miss anything? Add your own!

  5. I agree with all of Wayne's requests.

Since Barlimore was unsure on points 1 and 2, I'd like to throw in my two cents:

    1. The issue with abusing the .alt command for personal use different than any other mod power since, as you pointed out, the "damage" cannot be undone if it were abused. So your issue is that the loss potential is more severe than normal mod responsibility. I counter that as an IRC only command this command is much more easily police-able as running it shows the command to the entire staff on IRC. Perhaps this could be tempered by scripting a moderator-alt (.malt haha) command that does not work on any staff.

    2. I recognize that fire could cause lag in large amounts, much like torch spammed areas do. I think I've recommended having WorldGuard report fire placement if it is unbanned. Spam with fire is otherwise no different than spam with any other object, and its popularity only makes it a honeypot for catching griefers with WG reporting the placement. This can only be a good thing IMO.

  6. I would be interested in a moving spawn. Rather than having the map periodically expand outwards I think it would be interesting to have it expand linearly and the spawn should move with it. Or rather a new spawn should be created with every move and the previous one will become a warp. This will prevent the area around spawn from being stagnant over a revision. What do you think? Upvote if you support this idea. If you think I'm off my rocker downvote. If you have a better idea, or way to improve it make a new post and i promise I'll read it.

Thinking about this has given me the idea for my next major project which will be to either reconstruct Howl's Moving Castle to be the spawn (I'm a Ghibli fan, did you know?) or to make a city on the back of a train (probably referencing "Robot Carnival", go look it up on Youtube!).

  7. If you're around long enough you'll get hit by a Rev. change eventually.

Back in the day my Trapped Temple got a warp and then the next day the new rev. came!

Another time I was near done with a big-ish build, that's why you'll see two very similar builds on two different revs a lot of the time:

    Rev. 14: Hull

    Rev. 15: Space Battleship Yamato

But it ends up being no big deal as the finished product is that much better for having had a prototype.

  8. Slightly less known is the quote "Never take a friend for granted, because some day you may wake up and realize that you have lost a dimond while you were busy collecting stones."

Even fewer realize the quote goes on from there to say: "So keep an eye on your friend or you may have to run after them when they eventually steal your dimonds."

  9. I could also get behind letting the players know its a Zombie/Mob survival event, with your suggestion being the expected scenario, but instead place them within an extensively large cavern, similar to the story (book/movie) "The City of Ember". (It should come complete with a town hall with Bill Murry as the Mayor.) Mobs would come out of the surrounding darkness, which could be explored and mined

  10. Whenever we have a CTF, the most popular question is...well: "Are the servers up yet?"...

But aside from that, the next most popular question is, for various reasons, "When is the next CTF?"

I understand we don't want burn-out on events since they're a revenue generator, but I personally think 6 months is too long between events. Note: They don't all have to be CTF. <Glances over at 3 separate forum posts about some form of Zombie Survival.>

So I'd like to ask the Admins, and Techs to put their heads together, look at your calendars and declare at least a month, within the next 6, when we'll have the next event so we have something to tell our players at the end of CTF this weekend. We don't have to announce the exact day, or what the event will be, this is hype and it thrives on ambiguous details.

Why is this important to do now? CTF is our largest advertising opportunity to reach a huge number of players from all different servers simultaneously and really make them excited about their community.

I volunteer (Oh hell, what am I getting myself into.) to preside over a month long contest on C to build the starting base and LZ of a Zombie Survival event if the Tech's think they can pull that off as their next event. Ideally this contest will kick off following CTF, and if you will, announced at the end of CTF. Players will build anywhere on C, and mail me the coords of their build, built to certain specifications (i.e. less than 150x150x150 cube), I will select the top 5 builds (ensuring they meet the specifications that will work for the event) and put them up for a community poll as to which is best. The poll will close a week later. Giving the community the final decision I think will give our players a much stronger feeling of involvement in their events. There will still be plenty of room for surprises and secrets. I'd like you guys (Tech's and Admin's) to give me a Go/Delay decision on this potential contest by Thursday at 4pm EST. I really do think we can go for this and there is enough community interest in some form of Zombie/Mob Survival to be worthwhile.

This idea makes CTF not just one big thing for our community, but several. S and P, can you offer some similar ideas to announce at the end of CTF? Perhaps the next arena tournament or pig races or whatever it is you do with blocks?
