  1. That still isn't the original topic, but examples of the times I've made people "beg" are when I get them to explain why they feel they should be unbanned. Generally, this occurs when I'm taking a chance to unban someone who many of the other staff feels should be "perma-banned". So, basically it is me asking the player to convince me that they earn the privilege to play here (since it is by no means a right for anyone). If I feel what they have to say shows that truly are remorseful, and intend to change their ways, then I will unban them. So, I figure it is a better alternative than the option to leave them banned with zero hope for an unban.

Are all those steps completely necessary, they all seem to have the person to resort to begging, and once they've begged enough, they'll be unbanned. That doesn't seem like an efficient process.

I agree with what gsand is saying. It feels as if your in a submissive position because you feel like you have to plead for a chance to be unbanned.

I'll admit I've made a few people beg, but the steps I listed is not begging. It is a chance to prove they are capable of following directions. If you can't follow the rules, then you can't play here

It wont cause people to "change their ways". At most, it's a process to prove submission.

Your wording seems harsh, but I'm not really seeing this as a counter-argument. We have a set of rules, and we just ask for them to be followed. If they can't, then the ban appeal process is something they have to go through to show they can properly follow instructions. Many of my ban appeals, I required the player to go quote the rule they broke. This required them to not only read the rules, but follow a set of directions given to them to be unbanned. So, is it wrong for people to have to follow the rules to play here?

I think the fact that nerd has more than 100,000 bans after only being open 5 years might mean that we should revisit our banning policy.  Possibly implementing temporary bans?

I don't. I feel part of the punishment is having to make the ban appeal, having to admit your wrongdoing. If we just set ban lengths that automatically expire, I don't think that causes people to change their ways. Heck, many people who do go through the process refuse to change their ways, but many others do.

  5. It has now been six months since your last appeal was denied. Looking through your past bans, you haven't really seemed to learn your lesson. I'm going to need you to convince me to unban you. Your original post isn't really very convincing, So, take some time, decide exactly why you feel you should be unbanned.

  6. We have never really had any set guidelines. Usually after "a while", something like this comes up, and people who have not been around for a couple months or so, we will shoot them a PM, asking if they want to remain on staff or be removed. If they want to be removed, we take it as an official step down, and move them to past moderators. If we get no answer in a week or two, we move them to inactive moderators. If they wish to remain, we tell them to get their shit together, and come play with us from time to time.

  7. Hey BCB,

Was just waiting until your actual unban date to respond. Keep in mind, we do not give this chance lightly. As I stated in the last appeal, any future infractions will result in ban lengths of at least a year. If you're not sure if something is a rule violation, feel free to contact an admin any way necessary. I'll end this the way I did your first appeal two years ago: "Please try to stick to the rules. I don't want to see you back here. Unbanned, Welcome back"

  8. What is the twitter account going to be used for?

We like to use it to keep people informed. It is redundant if you already look at the forums / subreddit, but some people like the info to come to them. In the age of smart phones, people can follow it to get instant notifications of information. Feel free to look through the past tweets. If you feel it could be used differently, let us know.

  11. I hope everyone enjoyed the festivities! We had 340 accounts that were split between two teams that played their hearts out. Blue was able to hold the lead and win with 123 Flag Captures, with Red having 94 Flag Captures. More stats can be found over at our donation page.

Looking at this page, I'm very appreciative of the generosity of this community. In one day, we were able to raise $2287 to keep our servers kicking. I understand that not everyone could donate, and that is fine. We pride ourselves on not requiring the community to pay to play. Keep in mind, we only ask for donations when we really need them (such as the event we just had), but if you feel like giving any other time of year, the donate page stays active year round.

I'm glad to see that we've made it this far, and I am excited to see where we all go from here.

  12. Ban for montygfgfgdf on c.nerd.nu for Crop, general, redstone grief on S (1900+), no constructive edits nerd.nu/appeal by switchviewz on 2014-05-27 18:52:45 (no more bans, 2 notes)

Your banning moderator (switchviewz) will be with you shortly. If he hasn't responded in 48 hours, feel free to bump your post. We appreciate your patience.

  13. Going to post here to try and generate some discussion, then we could hammer out details

    1. Status of the new nerd.nu website, now approaching 2 years overdue. I have a website partially coded up already. If the rumoured PHP one is no further along than mine, can we finish mine and run it? It had an overwhelmingly positive response from everyone who saw it in action.

    2. I suggest we open donations year-round

    3. I suggest we give players cosmetic perks for donating - a badge on their (new) profile, possibly custom welcome messages, coloured asterisk next to name (like "<*barneygale>")

    4. I suggest we give players badges on their profiles detailing what events and competitions they've entered, and special badges for winners and runner-ups.

    5. I propose a more formal partnership between developers within the community and the tech admins, and more encouragement from the admins for technically-minded people to contribute their skills and time.

    6. The tech admins could run a "changelog blog" where they'd occasionally post about changes going into the servers.

    7. In the meeting, I'd like to debate adding dedicated subforums (on the same level as General Discussion) for creative, survival and pve, as we had on the old forums. If we could allow each side a few minutes to lay out their case and then have a straw poll at the end, that would be ideal.

    8. In general I'd love for us to talk about how to make progress faster. Do we need specific people to take responsibility for different projects? Currently I feel power-sharing is giving everyone an excuse to do nothing, because it's never solely your responsibility to get X or Y done. I'm not sure I have any particular suggestions for solving this but I'd love to hear anyone else's. I think a lot of servers really benefit from having one person in charge, and we did well under Nat. The same could be applied to individual servers (i.e. have a "lead" c admin, but they needn't take an unfair portion of the work).

    9. Would be good to hear what the survival admins have been up to, and what's been decided so far

    2) nerd.nu/donate is open year round, and does accept donations at any time.

    3) I'm still leaning to no on this, but willing to hear cases for it.

    7) I'm willing to take the side of not splitting them. My idea (which can be implemented immediately) is to add some hyperlinks under Server Discussion on the main page that leads to the filtered pages (like this, and this, and this). This solves the problem of people that are interested in seeing information on all the servers not having to check separate sub forums, but those who want to see specific server information can see just what they want.

  14. No, that's working fine, but https://nerd.nu/forums/index.php?app=members&module=list is a good example of what I mean. Under each username, there's a profile viewcount, that's stopped updating. Another example is as follows: https://nerd.nu/forums/index.php?/user/8-denevien/

In your stats column, the profile views count has gone still at 86, whereas the Latest Visitors section still updates accordingly.

Ah, I had completely overlooked that line, but it seems slide has fixed it.
