  1. Firstly... SafeBuckets is toggle-able? I'm not sure what you mean here, but I don't see how it's toggle-able or how it would be any less non-vanilla if it were. Usually on Chaos revs, spreading lava everywhere is allowed, if not actively encouraged. The fact that people follow the rules on Chaos does not, in my view, constitute an argument that everyone with a bucket will be falling over themselves to pour lava all over spawn with it on Survival. Concerning "it's easy for a griefer with xray to make a bucket", I think it would be considerably easier to grief using other tools (like a pickaxe). Keep in mind that redstone contraptions on survival are often built in enclosed spaces and are *already* a pain to fix. Rails running parallel without a gap - the configuration that LogBlock doesn't roll back reliably - aren't terribly common on S either. On to "in terms of moderating...": The point isn't how long it takes a moderator to fulfil a request; it's how much time is spent waiting for a moderator by players. For those with limited time available to play Minecraft, it can be incredibly frustrating if half of it is spent waiting for a mod to get round to their modreq. There was often a backlog of several hours when I last played S, and I've been given to understand the under-staffing problem there has become even worse since. To compound this issue, it's not unheard-of for grinders or other machines to need water placed in confined spaces and/or in a specific order, which can mean several modreqs have to be made to get the water where you want it. Following on from that, actually I think live action flowing water is essential in some cases; particularly when you're building something and not quite sure of all the details. If you're a mod, you can just keep flowing new water when the design changes--if not, you might be reduced to building things in a singleplayer creative world before attempting them "live". Other cases in which it's important include building in the end as has already been mentioned. Finally, you haven't addressed this bit at all: "Making ponds is tough because of the glitchy interaction with still and flowing water that makes some parts of the potential pond not fill up like it is supposed to. Nowadays you'd need constant mod surveillance just to make an artificial lake."
  2. The only reason you think MCPublic requires SafeBuckets is that it's been in place since long before you were even modded. If Amaranth and I had instead written a plugin that disabled diamonds, no doubt you'd be here zealously defending the position that diamonds make the server more difficult to moderate.
  3. I've felt for a long time that SafeBuckets has outlived its usefulness. The disadvantages quite clearly (to me) outweigh the advantages, and have for some time. I don't play on the servers any more, but back in the day (2+ years ago) I helped write SafeBuckets, so maybe my opinion of it is of some interest.
  4. IRC ban is already removed. It would've been temporary, but I can't set temporary bans, so... Relevant logs: https://gist.github.com/edk141/63584d40e337524c8a57

    In-Game Chat Relay

The bots broke and I've been a bit distracted by personal stuff. I'll try to get them working soon.
  6. There's a theoretical limit of 4294967296 IP addresses. Modern hardware can run more md5 hash operations than this every second. If your system were ever compromised, the hashes could be translated into IP addresses in less time than it would take to open a web browser and download the database dump.
  7. LinkedHashSet of Timelesses would solve this problem neatly, if Timeless had a useful hashcode.
  8. Maybe don't allow armour to be equipped when PvP protection is on, and instead send a chat message saying "run /blahcommand to disable pvp protection before you can armour up"?
  9. (I'm a RedditBot admin). RedditBot isn't run by MCPublic/nerd.nu/whatever, but since this is still here: appeal denied, you've proved incapable of using the bot sensibly. Could a staff member close this thread please?
  10. play nice, don't do it again, unbanned.
  11. If it was really "a split second after the placement" it seems like a clear case of abusing the grief rules in order to keep loot after you're killed. taking heads or any other blocks under such circumstances shouldn't be considered griefing.
  12. people always think I'm trolling when I bring this up, but I've always been pretty sure using Rei's is cheating. A lot of players say things like "you can't ban it, it's too useful", which makes me more convinced that it's too game changing to still count as "vanilla". Regarding ores under lava, can't we somehow tweak fire resist so it lets you burn if you start mining?
  13. which they can't do on the subreddit..?
  14. nope, just white space there
  15. moderator things don't come up under any posts anywhere (as far as I can tell) and I can't do anything to reports. I am still a mod, right? also, unrelatedly, I still think admin-only custom titles and little badges with stars on them aren't what nerd is meant to be about...
