  1. I will setup the lobby so the mods are able to pretty it up a bit, thus satisfying y'alls desire. Also, the reasons for not using C are space and features. The contest will be using a plot plugin, allowing plot owners to manage the perms themselves after claiming. Also permissions are being granted that give the builders more advanced tools.... I'm waiting on 1 final piece before I can open the doors

This sounds like a pretty good idea, I can't wait!

  2. We have a thread here regarding ads on reddit. Now, we'd like to start looking at where else we should advertise. Things to keep in mind regarding this:

    • We will not be giving any sort of in game rewards for voting on sites.
    • We do not have copious amounts of funding, so cheaper is better.
    • If it is a site that requires an account to be made, do not make one for us. Post it here, and we will handle the registration.

    So, get posting ideas!

Back during the Summer of 2013 we started to look into advertising, I suggested a bunch of server websites. I'm going to go back and find some more

Here is a good place for an ad. This was the very first website I saw when I searched for "minecraft servers" in google and is a pretty huge website itself

    http://minecraft-server-list.com/

Edit: I also noticed that we turned off UDP query, which is causing problems with these ads

Here is another post about advertising from earlier for reference

  3. Thank you totemo, you were one of the most awesome techs I can remember, you were always helping when something went wrong and just made things seem right on the servers. I have a lot of memories from the server and i'm glad that I got to see you playing minecraft. I hope that everything goes well from now on, although i'm sad that this is happening, i'm glad that you are shifting you focus and focusing on other things. I'll miss you, I hope to see you around sometime!

  4. Please forgive my lack of technical knowledge in this area. What's the impact on server load by such a plugin? IIRC the last time we tried something like this was with WG a couple years ago and it melted the server. How is this different / how have things changed since then?

Even though we have a new box, the server's kind of already maxed out now with the lobby, and the lobby has the bare minimum needed for a user to connect, see a world and run a command. I doubt anything will be different, we'll have to run those server timings and see just like what we did with CH awhile ago

  5. Anyways, Back on Topic.

I think we should run a vote on S using NuVote to see what the actual active player base thinks.

    - gsand

    ;D

Edit: If you disagree with anything I have posted, I urge you to reply, All opinions are greatly appreciated! -gsand ;D

Or a [server] Alert linking the playerbase on S to this forum post, to make them notice it better have it tell them about this post upon log in

Also NuVote is a really old plugin that hasen't been used in a very, very long time. The plugin itself is still compatible with 1.7.2 Bukkit though if interested, as I just tested it out.

  6. Hey all.  I started doing a post on the subreddit called "this week in PvE."  Lacking a calender, I was hoping to generate interest in server events.  Since I'm on a lot, I ussually hear of the events early.  By consolodating everything and posting early, people are able to plan and hopefully look forward to certain days.  Unfortunatly, I've found that if I post midweek for a batch of weekend events, that post ends up dropping down and being out of sight by the time an event rolls around.  Is there any way to impliment a calender for the server, or at the very least sticky my post or a similar post so that we gain some visability?  As we get into mid/late rev, events and happenings are what can keeps the population high after all the building is done.  Thanks!

We started using https://nerd.nu/forum/index.php?/calendar/ but I don't think we are posting events there anymore. I remember it being used for Survival arenas, etc, but not for PvE events at all

  7. Perhaps we could modreq for static water? That'd be pretty cool and would fix all problems that would come from this addition,

I'm having second thoughts about that, and this only applies to PvE, not survival right? SafeBuckets is very useful on Survival but on PvE, as edk said it seems to have outlived it's usefulness

Why might that be?, most of the builds on Survival seem to use static water/lava anyway, and removing safebuckets from survival would cause lava to burn right through signs, and make that build useless.

As you said, we can work around that by making modreq's, but that would get real messy real fast, imagine if you wanted to make a "trap" like I see almost every Survival revision where at the very top there is static lava and nothing until you hit bedrock. You would need to make a very long and confusing modreq or make several in different places. Now that dosen't sound that bad, but a moderator who handles that will have to look around that general area, try and find the place where the lava should go, and have to individually place static lava, one by one, not to mention the complicated configs that the tech admins would have to set that up to make that happen.

Now this might not make much sense, as all grief can easily be rolled easily back within a matter of seconds, but imagine if you have a house that has wood walls, and a pond at the bottom. Now I know firespread can and probably will be disabled, but you could just grab a bunch of lava buckets, make your way around the walls of the house, and have the house blocked off by a lava wall, and have the water underneath it gone within a few seconds, also not to mention that Survival seems to be targeted by griefers looking to cause this type of damage alot, and I have been a victim of that in the past.

Now let's talk about Creative, If we were to disable SafeBuckets on C, we would have a bunch of similar and different issues crop up. Having easily accessible static water on C is awesome for quick and easy building, without having to put a bunch of signs underneath all of it. If we were to permanently remove SafeBuckets from Creative, we would no longer have that luxury, and we would have to come up with a solution, or make static lava/water available to players, via a /kit or similar.

Again, let's go back to griefers, now I am going to talk about Hack/Grief clients, or malicious client mods in general. Most of these have auto place features where you can massively spread lava all around the place, in addition to destroying and wiping builds off the map, turning it into a minecraft type wasteland. Let's say you have a nice tower that you just finished building on C. Someone could go to the roof, put a bunch of water on the edge walls, then add lava to that. and before you know it you have an almost effortless obsidian wall, not to mention the countless possibilities and other things you could do with the lava on top of water idea. Overall it just dosen't seem worth it until we can come up with a better idea.

Now back to PvE, griefing isn't really a huge issue on that server, and SafeBuckets really isn't needed when you think about it, other than for easy building. So I would have no problem with the removal of SafeBuckets on PvE.

  8. Some pretty good points raised there, I've gotta agree. The only problems I can see with it is the building of S spawns, but that can be fixed with some signs easily, just a couple minutes lost. I'm all for it.

Or have water blocks place still water and buckets place regular, this relevant topic on our subreddit might be of interest

  9. Hi, I noticed that the theme "Reddit Public Classic" is not the default. I remember there being discussion about this and was wondering if the theme was going to be changed to that one, or if we are going to stick with the IBP default. Just curious about this, I also read somewhere that the theme isn't finished and is still being worked on, but it appears to be finished now.

  10. We now have beds enabled so I believe that makes spawn camping less frequent and will make people less likely to do it

I had an idea last night that's sort of relevant: what if there was an ender chest in spawn? You could grab some gear before jumping down and be more properly equipped.

This idea combined with beds being enabled I believe will kill off any spawn camping issues from that point on
  11. A good amount of the posts are about the servers in general, not a specific one. Denevien's main "Server Discussion" idea could fix this, but I still feel like it could be a bit disjointed.

I don't feel that we're a big enough community to warrant having seperate forums for C, P and S. I think it might also detract from the sense of community that we're trying to create. I like having the same forum for all 3 servers because I can see what builds, discussions or events are happening on all servers. I'm not saying you won't be able to do that if there were seperate forums, it just wouldn't be as easy.

I'm getting the same type of feeling here, too. The way we have it now seems to work enough to get the job done, and I really don't see any point in changing it

  12. I have used this on my server for a long time and believe the players of both S and C would enjoy its usefulness.

    http://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/skychest-v1-5/

SkyChest is Bukkit plugin. With just a click of your left mouse button you can organize your chest! It was created out of the idea of convenience. I think that a nice organized chest is easier to deal with than a "non-organized" chest. When I was creating my server I was wondering what would be a good thing to have. It is a raiding server and those deal with chests full of loot. So I created a chest organizer!

    Features

    • This plugin allows you to Left-Click on a chest that is unorganized and it will organize it for you!

      No commands needed, includes permissions!

    • Easy drag and drop method!
    • With only 1 permission it is very easy to control.
    • Does not affect server performance.
    • No Bugs!
I think that this would greatly help with all the chest sorting issues that everyone is having
  13. That all being said I wouldn’t mind seeing a factions.nerd.nu that isn’t driven by donation ranks. It would be nice to see a factions based server where everyone is equal and you don’t get to buy your way to being good.

Due to limited resources avalible on the server, this might be hard to do
  14. The one main feature that separates our Creative server & the vast majority of others is the plot system. With the system, it's fairly simple to limit usage of Worldedit & confine a player's edits to a singular area, making it far easier to monitor. While the plot system does include the option to allow other players to build with you on your plot, it distinctly separates builds & players from each other, which goes without saying is not what our attitude toward creative mode is & has been for the past few years.

Worldedit commands, though they can be restricted to smaller uses, can be easily abused to destroy other people's builds in a freeworld environment, and are more than a little bit of a pain to repair. Though a small portion of the argument against it can be attributed to the stress it puts on the server, the potential for its abuse far outweighs any other argument.

It's also fun to see new people joining say "where can I build?, what, there's no plot system? That's awesome", too. To give people WorldEdit, they would have to be limited to just a very small plot, and just building in a small square compared to no limits limits the things and creations that people can build, and usually draws more people away than pulling them in.

I remember when Minecraft Classic was all about "Free build" and "build where ever you want, no limits" and attracted a bunch of people wanting that experience to it, until mojang killed classic.

I would just hate to see c.nerd.nu go to a plot limit just to have worldedit. I don't care about worldedit as long as we keep the same experience as we have now.
