  1. I agree with all of this. Especially - to keep this on topic - the second paragraph. Anyone who has relevant information or particularly if they were directly involved they should be spoken to and they are encouraged to give their input. And, of course, at any time a player sees a ban and feels the staff member(s) handling it have been unfair, they are welcome to come to a different staff member. I have spoken to mods about how they handle bans in the past and will not hesitate to do so in the future if necessary. Again, I cannot be everywhere at once, and I rely on the hundreds of people looking at ban appeals to keep an eye on the banning staff and appeal to another staff member if they feel something is amiss.
  2. I am open to players suggesting names for possible mods. This has always been a personal policy of mine, albeit an unwritten one. I know I can't be everywhere all the time, so I rely on the rest of the people who play the servers to keep their eyes open. Usually after a player has suggested a name I either look through logs to get a feel of how the person conducts themselves in game, or I talk to them in mumble if I'm on at the same time they are, or ask other people about them and their suitability for modship. Input from anyone on anything is always welcome. This is true for any Admin position as well. I have had mods in the past say who they think would be a good server or Head Admin and I take that into consideration as I discuss said person's suitability with the other Head Admins. The same can be said for anyone who plays the servers. It's informal and you have to trust me to listen, but I'd like to think my past record shows I do take the time to listen to anyone who wants/needs to speak with me about anything. It seems to me we need to formalize the preceding policy - Barlimore has kicked it off for the next CAdmin discussion. Controversial bans (I know I've contributed to the drama regarding this and one particular ban). First off, I am troubled by how often I am compared to a dictator or some totalitarian regime. The decision to ban barneygale and keep him banned was already collaborative effort by all the Head Admins and most of the Tech Admins (because barney was a security risk to the servers). Lude issued the ban in the first place for "abuse of powers (unauthorized server access), ban evasion." Barney was given several opportunities to appeal his ban but continued to burn bridges, resulting in bans from mumble, irc, the forums, and the subreddit - the bans from each coming with their own reasons; he was not just whole-sale across the board banned from everything. He is not the only one banned from all of Nerd's services. I am willing to try to reconstruct a history of his ban and multiple appeals if there is interest, but if you search the old forums they are there, publicly viewable. As this is a partial derailment of the topic at hand, I will leave further comments to said post (should it be requested by people). I understand wanting to have a greater say in the community, but the more controversial bans often contain very personal information neither side would want made public. In these cases in particular, the people involved trust the banning Admin with the private information Permabans are either repeat offenders who make it clear they have not learned how to follow the rules, or people who have been determined by staff at some point to be a detriment to the community in some way. The better examples are the ones banned for harassing others. These in particular would not be pretty to have to make public.
  3. Last I heard it wasn't really working properly. If I remember correctly slide had adjusted some of the stats to remove the obviously impossible, but I think there's something broken in the code for the site or how it links into the server information.
  4. This is exactly it. We are open to adjusting the cap - I'd have to look up what it is at the moment, but it seemed to be a good balance of enough to like what you like and not too many so you can, as Tharine said, downvote everything in a thread.
  5. We have four major things on our to-do list: 1. Techs need to move us totally over to the new box. 2. CTF 3. Update to 1.6.2 4. Reset the Revs i. Survival ii. Creative iii. PvE Personally I was thinking ^ in that exact order, or rather with 3 and 4 at the same time. However, I'm open to changing the order of some of the things, such as we could update C to 1.6.2 now and get the new rev up later. I think we're close to a working modmode or some equivalent (ask Deaygo/totemo), so we could update soon, then CTF, then new rev all the servers (in whatever order). Took the liberty: http://www.reddit.com/r/mcpublic/comments/1j2pae/updates_on_our_todo_list/
  6. The new features for the different kinds of blocks is brilliant. I'd also like to probably leave it to the players to figure out what does what exactly - just hint that more than just wool does damage, and some blocks have positive effects! I'd like to announce a week in advance, and that week can be used to polish up things/prep the map. Ideally we'd get the event done before school starts again (which, in some parts of North America, is about August 19 - such as my University!). Thank you both again, totemo and kitcat, for all the hard work!
  7. Sorry I've been sort of hands-off with this, but kitcatbar, the map looks good :) Thank you so much for helping with this. Thank you as well, totemo, for picking up the code and moving this forward :3
  8. At first I thought this was about me, but I later realized this was about someone else. The standard way to deal with this (for me) is to talk with both sides and try to understand why the players feel biased against and why the staff member(s) did what they did. Often it boils down to misinterpretation of intent from one or both sides. Usually it also comes down to telling both sides to steer clear of each other and try not to antagonize the other side. It's a little like dealing with children, to be honest. If you can't get along, stay in your own separate corners. And the staff in question are told to get another staff member to deal with the players if there's ever a problem in the future. A bit like not modding your own PvP, since you're personally involved with the supposed offender. I'd also like to point out that there is no equivalent crimp placed on the normal proceedings of the players involved. And, of course, both sides are always welcome to appeal to a higher "authority" if they feel they've been misused by anyone. I'll try not to take it personally that I too helped run arena nights last S rev and yet apparently I am beneath your notice. As far as the best interests of S, I try to keep the best interests of all the servers in mind at all times. For me it's a balancing act. S isn't my only server; I "belong" to all three. The true advocates for S ought to be and are the SAdmins. They have an idea for S, they run it by the Heads, we consider what it would mean to S but also to P and/or C, and if we find no conflict, then usually the idea can be implemented. Obviously it can and usually is more complicated than that, but while someone who has a working knowledge of the S culture would be a good addition to the Head Admin team, a true Head Admin cannot and should not be focused strictly on one server. As schererererer pointed out, for most of the time I have been staff (since September 2011), most of the Head Admins came from C and S. S had luke and Lude; C had AlcoJew, forty_two, Pilot3033, fazaden (I'm assuming), cmdrtebok, and me. To be honest I'm not sure what server Skuld played. It is only very recently that has shifted to P and C. If I remember correctly, Steve has been the first P-based Head Admin since I've been staff. And as I said, I may not have originated on S - a lot of people didn't, in fact most people started playing C first, then shifted over - I have played every Rev of S since Rev. 13. How am I not an S player? Yes, I "claim" C as my home and I was a CAdmin, but I have played every Rev of all three servers since January 2012 in some capacity. And I intend to continue doing so as much as writing my dissertation for a Ph.D. allows. Yes, we do need more Heads, and I would love to pull from S if said SAdmin is the best for the job at the time under the current circumstances. I don't really care what server they're from; I'm not prejudiced. Sorry for the delay in responding to all of this.
  9. I went ahead and created an account with them that represents the servers as a collective, rather than just myself - so it's there if we need to/want to/can use it in the future. I'll be sharing this with Admins so I'm not the only one holding the keys.
  10. I'm starting up a google doc with the names of people who want to just moderate the event. Just contact me (and I'll probably end up adding at least the other heads to this) to get on the list. The list is just to see how many people are going to mod it and so slide knows who he needs to add to the "staff team" - but it's also not permanent if you change your mind!
  11. I would assume so, though last time we had signs to warp people back to the spleef and obstacle course iirc.
  12. From the archived old forums, originally posted by cmdrtebok in July 2011. From day one our objective was to pull together a moderation team that understood this and did not view becoming a moderator as a promotion in that sense. While we attempt to make the moderator job as fun as possible and keep people motivated to do free work for us, at the same time, they are not better or worse then the users in any way. To be honest becoming a mod while it is fun and it feels good to have a community of people choose you for something but beyond that the job kind of sucks. Its a lot of effort with little to no return. The return I try and pull from the experience is making a community such as this one possible. I have witnessed people create some really extraordinary things with blocks. I have seen people make new friends and more. We have helped out people when they were at their lowest, and others (including myself) deal with grief and depression. Beyond that we donated thousands of dollars to ChildsPlay. Not so bad if I do say so myself. The point is however is that it isn't me or the staff that made all these things possible, its the users and the community. The staff is only supposed to be around to keep things fun and fair and nothing more. Its important that the staff don't start behaving like they are better then the users in anyway, frankly you aren't. We ask people respect mods and admins in the rules only because it makes it far more difficult in dealing with people when the only attitude you are ever greeted with is petulance. Due to this we do require a certain level of conduct from people we choose to become staff, as much to protect that person as to make sure the community runs smoothly. I want to be crystal clear that I am not talking about any specific individuals or groups of people on the server. This is a blanket statement that applies to everyone in the community we are going to consider for staff or is staff. Our license for conduct is generous and does not apply at all to users in any way (Besides, of course things, that are in violation of the rules). Honestly if I never hear about it and it doesn't become a problem, it isn't a problem at all. If you do not want to be held to any sort of conduct accountability then I suggest you turn down a mod nomination and if you are already on staff, you are free to take leave of your position at any time. I do not mean this to be a jerk. If you would like to be a user please do. We will welcome you back on staff as soon as you are ready to step up again and take responsibility. I know the staff are all good people and good at their jobs, I can't imagine I wouldn't be happy to have them back. If being a mod, or mccondom is stressful or you can't deal with a certain aspect of the job. Don't worry about it, be a user for a while. Play Minecraft, go in mumble, be free. You always have that option. The people who I choose to become staff are never chosen simply because I think they deserve a promotion. These are people I am saddling with non paid responsibility; its not exactly a favor. We get charged with the accusation of nepotism all the time, but frankly I do not know how to address this. Would they prefer that we modded people we didn't know? Give them power over users with out being their friends or knowing what they are like? There isn't any real power anyway. That is the point of this whole thread. At the same time I don't need or want everyone I am friends with on the server on the staff, there is simply no reason for it. This is just a video game on the internet its really not personal, nor should it be. If you were not chosen for a position on the staff please do not take it personally. It is not meant as a personal insult or anything to that effect. If you are taking it personally then its evidence that we have made the correct choice. And if you view the fact that someone was modded over someone else as a personal slight, we really need you to adjust your attitude and help us make better decisions, calmly and treating everyone with respect. What we need right now is professional detachment. We are trying to build a community of equal users, personal issues with power have no place in it and in the long run will become detrimental The last thing I want to add is that these "jobs" aren't forever. We do not have lifetime positions. If we ask you to leave we expect that you will understand gracefully and bow out. We do not do this lightly nor is it something anyone enjoys doing. Things in the past have become far to personal in that aspect and it will not be like this in the future. We are going to figure out how to keep new and fresh ideas coming and figuring out what does and doesn't work. A big part of this is bringing in new people and having others trust them to take over and bow out. The old culture needs to pass and this point forwards we are going to encourage more participation on the server admin aspect and demand greater openness from all head and server admins. We do reserve the right to talk among ourselves to iron out certain ideas and issues with out having all eyes, input and drama involved before we figured out our stance. We will always come forwards with what we decide and we know our users have no problem discussing things endlessly in the forums. We will listen, we will change and we will continue to refine the way nerd.nu works. For those of you who are paying attention we are having a lot of changes in the way we operate and more to come in the coming weeks. We will be honest and open about what is going on. This post is the first of many from myself and others on the admin staff outlaying our ideas for what we want in a server and implementing a fair system that will last beyond my own involvement. I am in my waning months of activity on these servers. I will make sure that we have a great system in place before I go, one that can last through a long haul and make as many people happy as we can while holding true to the ideals that Reddit Public was founded under. I edited it a little, mostly for spelling. Also here is the link to the original post (so people can read the comments). http://nerd.nu/archives/index.php?p=/discussion/3771/becoming-a-moderator-is-not-a-promotion Also from McLrn227 in April 2011: I don't mean this as a slight to anyone in particular, but try to remember that our main goal is to provide a friendly playing environment for the users. Use the tools you have before passing judgement on someone. Many players are young and not familiar with our rules. Talk to them. Try to communicate. [...] We are public servers, remember to treat everyone with respect and talk/act in a way that you'd expect the users to conduct themselves as well. 13. I don't have one :3 I haven't played Pokemon since.... like the 1990s >_>
  14. If you look at the bottom of the forums there's an option to change the theme - "Change Theme" - it's under the white background and near the orange RSS feed button (for me). You can change the theme there - it's individually set, so you can use the theme that looks more like the old forums or stay with the default IPB theme :p
  15. That sucks. No worries, come back when you can :)
  16. This probably means your name was on a compromised account list our techs preemptively banned. Given the age of the ban, I suggest you make sure you've changed your password (and never share it with anyone) and have a fresh copy of Minecraft (or at least nothing that could have something like a keylogger on it). Post back here stating you've done the above to secure your account. Thanks :)
  17. Given the age of the ban and your honestly, I'm just going to go ahead and unban you. Please review the rules at nerd.nu/rules, as a lot has changed since 2011 :P
  18. Eh, given the age of the ban and your claim to it being hacked, just make sure you've changed your password and uninstalled anything that might have a key logger in it. Unbanned.
  19. Given that you had just been unbanned (granted for a different rule break), you ought to have been particularly familiar with the rules. I'm going to take the liberty over Kohlse and I would set a ban length, but that time would have already past so I am going to unban you straight out. As Cyotie said in your last appeal, I hope to not see you having to appeal another ban :)
  20. I will be recording and I am sure others will be recording as well, so hopefully everyone can catch up with that. I also hope to take notes or have someone take notes that can be put up in a google doc.
  21. No and no and... no John Adams was the second president of the United States from 1797-1800. I'm a fan of his (and of US History) and he was born in 1735. Brooks Adams was his Great-Grandson (born 1848). But Brooks is also a gender-ambivalent name and just well, a cool name, so I use it as a pen name sometimes. Yes, there's an "s" at the end of Brooks; it's not a typo
  22. See you vortex! Thanks for all the hard work and I hope to see you around again soon :)
  23. You may have noticed something new when people log in about fishcheck. Essentially it checks not only bouncer for bans, but several other banning services: Mcbans, Mcbouncer, McBlockit, Minebans, and Glizer. /fishcheck, as it says, will give you more information. The idea behind it is to help us identify things such as griefing groups faster as odds are they'll have bans on other servers. Of course we don't necessarily ban based off what someone's done on other servers, but it can help people know who to follow/keep an eye on. [Edit:] Also, we are still only enforcing mcbouncer bans. [/Edit] This may be temporary, depending on how it works out. Thanks!
  24. In the ongoing discussions about the servers and their population numbers, the topic of our youtube channel came up again. In the last post on the old forums (and most of the interest since then) only a few mods expressed any real interest in the channel and/or making promotional videos for the servers, and only one video has been posted to it. Anyway, the channel/username is MCPublicServers. The idea was to have a positive presence on youtube (to combat AVO and other griefing vids) and just getting our name out there for people looking through Minecraft videos. Currently, the one video we do have is of the Thanksgiving community project/warp on C tacodude3 lead last year. However, Skylord_Char, buzzinbee, and taco are working on another video, taking footage from all three servers. The idea behind it, again, to just to show people on youtube what the servers have to offer. Furthermore, if you or any one know has an interest in making videos of the servers (anything from a cool build to PvP footage to a spleef match - anything that captures the "essence" of the servers) and would like to have it posted it to the channel, please contact/have them contact myself with a download link and I will post it to the channel. Thanks.
