  1. The troll and harassing factor is big. I imagine it sends some message to new players, but I don't know what that is. Someone could camp out in their original home at the edge of the world for a month, come in to the centre for a trade and be killed. I hope it has a timeout.

  2. The people who want to play creative are falling into more opposite groups than before - children and roleplayers, and terrain/worldeditors. We barely serve either, and I wouldn't want to see compromises in either or both directions.

Creative has a lot less cost put into it by each player, as it's easy to move. If I used world downloader I could tp to each of my builds. It would take two minutes and I wouldn't need to ever come back (not happening). However on P and S it's the other people that add much of the value. Advertising will work for all server, just not as long for C.

  3. Seeing as this involves the entire history of Nerd, I think it's worth having a tl;dr to the best of my knowledge. Delete this post if you disagree or feel it shouldn't be around, I'll automatically agree with it this time.

Dragging_low and Ojwasguilty were head admin and mod respectively at the start of Nerd, and "spent 20 hours a day clearing up after AVO". AVO and anything related was entirely hated by the community. LadyRavenOwl was associated with AVO people in their personal lives, but was not a member. She's since come to Nerd and is now a mod. Carver was briefly associated with AVO in-game, but was not a member or a griefer, but was banned for reasons stating he was in AVO. Demands as follows,

    a) AVO was/is hated by the community, anyone who was so close to it shouldn't be Nerd staff.

    b) Carver was much less weakly associated with AVO, and therefore should be preferred/unbanned.

edit: As I expected, my knowledge is incomplete. See Cyotie's post below.

  4. More along the lines of turning them into snowmen. That'd be fun, to have snowmen with the names of every banned player drop randomly, have everyone go beat em up.

There's nearly 4000 pages of 25 banned players per page here. Say half of them have been unbanned, and in a real day a snowman will walk on 125 different blocks then they would cover the whole map in snow. Totemo there's the entire reasoning for why this must happen :P.

  5. I imagine the tech admins and some third party plugin writers have not finished, possibly not started, their plugin updates. There's not the full rush until the stable build is out. Also the mod tools, Watson probably depends on the MCP which isn't out.

  6. People are defending the choice they made, and the effort they put into their choice. As a 100-hour build can't be moved between servers, players will defend the choice to build it on the server that they did. We can't get around this, it's human nature and entirely valid. On the other hand, comparing servers is a problem. The social state of each server is largely about the community once you're accepted in it. A P player going on S might find it more difficult to get accepted into the community than the other way around, which is necessary due to the risks involved. P and C risks are almost entirely grief-related, and undoable with a modreq, S players can gain and lose items from each other, which seems to come up in server comparisons. We're unified, offering different things in different places, and yet many of us care about other servers or games we might compare Nerd to. If we have nothing to universally agree as lower/not-better than Nerd then we're left with in-fighting.

  7. It's a lot more productive for us having so much bare, unforested lands. The revs seem short enough that we can just do the tree-dependant ideas next time when there is a suitable forest (say if we wanted roofed forest). I dislike gentle or very steep slopes. When the gradient is something like between 1 in 20 and 1 in 3, and between 1 in 2 and 2 in 1 it's difficult to use the land without reworking it to be within those bands (other people may have different bands, worth asking). I'd like most of the map to be like the pixel art area. The variations could be chains of hills, where each chain is only 50-200 blocks wide, and each chain could be a different height (not all snow-capped). The grass could vary in colour.

Spawn was not enjoyable. I was frustrated within 20 seconds and just flew around as fast as possible in every direction. I haven't been back to explore it yet, I intend to but I always did go back to previous rev spawns much sooner. The outside of spawn is wonderful, that was worth the effort and I hope people have the motivation to do something equally grand again.

For Spawn City I'd like to see only non-repetitive skyscrapers bordering spawn. This probably means worldediting them in from further out plots. What if we had all skyscrapers on one side of spawn city, medium buildings on the middle slice, and homes on the other side, so the roofs are a massive slope? I think this sort of cohesion suits a busy collaborative server like this.

A while ago there was mention of a worldguard patch that added a no-fly flag for regions, which wasn't accepted, then something positive happened. I haven't heard anything further on that, is that now usable? The region flag game-mode can be set to survival to not allow flying. This can be seen ingame at Cyotie's house, /home tobylane:cyotie. Is this something players can modreq for?

  8. I first played generic games on the home Olivetti, and a reasonable Chess game on an alternate boot of the primary school computers.

As for consoles, Spyro Year of the Dragon, some dance-mat game, Colin McCrae all on a PS1.

Theme Hospital was a good early (in my time) PC game, there's a very playable clone called CorsixTH.

  9. I think we aren't the right subset of P players to answer this question. I don't know how to reach the newbs and so on, so I won't insist on that.

Can it be tied to TPS in some way? Start a new rev in Normal, when there is a two-hour period of TPS over 20 (which is something like a week after the start) change to hard?

  10. If the people who don't want to PVP had somewhere they could work for their clan, protected by the people who do want to PVP, it would be a diverse community. Even if it was something predictable like an obvious castle in each quadrant, it would encourage battles between larger groups of people, with more purpose. When the invaders get into the castle they attack the non-PVPers who may choose to fight back, and enjoy it. If they die, the invaders get a reward for getting so far in.

I'll add now that I do mean for the castles to be player made. Look at Vinhaven for an idea of what can be put up quickly when people want to get something up.

  11. Syn: You made up a question I never asked, asked it on PvE and named me as the person asking it. Don't puppet people like that. I'm not sure why the features of the change matter, I was focusing on the permission bit. If we could separate them and discuss them each that would be allowing this topic to solve everything.

Barlimore: Good thought. One major downside to requiring people stay logged in for three deaths just to stay unbanned is that some will think it's not worth it/demoralised and just leave. Despite that it seems the rules already cover this and dictate people can't log out until they are away from their enemy. Three chases ending in death from bed, while they are at worst naked and at best scrabbling to get their drops before their enemy does - how long does that take for people of various skill levels? Of course we could just reward the enemy entirely, they get it all. In which case I'd expect everyone to have beds far out, which again is not newb-friendly.

  12. A gay slur contained in a reference is still wrong. A second ban on this shows I'm still referring to these things incorrectly. Damn my free mindedness, etc etc.

    • No sexism, racism, homophobia or any type of hate speech, especially targeted at specific users (harassment).
  13. If beds are going to be implemented I feel like we'd need to make a rule stating that players cannot break the beds of other players to reset their spawn(regardless of whether or not they replace the bed afterwards). Could also implement LWC on beds if that's a possibility to prevent that.

Could that be extended with: No contraption to kill someone at their bed, to modify their spawn position in relation to their bed, or block access between their bed and the outside world any more than the home/bed owner has done so themselves?

  14. And PvP has been in the game a long time, but that doesn't stop it being limited. Draykar I want you to be appalled, and it doesn't have to be here, but I'd like to hear how this is different to PvP on P/C. Roast you have a point, but it's from a very narrow and 'popular' point of view. Yes, people play PvE for beds, and for opt-in PVP, and the community that cannot exist with constant PVP.

There are a few more options possible, which could be in a followup poll, but also has an impact now. Lucky with a bed reset means that you have to walk back to your base and sleep in the bed again to respawn at it. Lucky without a bed respawn means you can just die to any other player or method and spawn at your bed, even if your earlier killer is still there.

  15. I worded it that way to show up the preferential treatment of Survival. I'll do so again, in a different way.

For any PvP on P, for increased PvP on P and any PvP on C, it sounds like P and C admins asked permission from S admins for their servers to have PvP. It sounds like an ex-S admin was the one to say no to PvP on C. Following that reasoning, have you asked permission from the P admins for beds? Beds in the minecraft mode of survival are unique to P, therefore you must ask permission from the relevant admins, and they are allowed to turn you and your players down.

I'd appreciate it if some people would imagine they do accept the reasoning about asking permission, and answer from that point of view.

  16. Having beds on S would encourage PVE players to live entirely in a corner of the world and never interact with the rest of the world. We must not allow those people to join the server for something that doesn't belong on S.

I would be one of them, with or without Lucky.

  17. I think we're at a point where there are so many idea for game change, the vast majority of which are damaging to the community even if they don't sound like it. The admins don't have the time to explain why each of them are bad, partly because some people rightly just won't see it that way. If the admins don't explain, they are a mysterious controlling box of magic to be despised. The only way out of that that I can see (and please add more ways) is player discussion without any kind of reality-check from the admins for a week or so. Which wouldn't really work as the staff are players too, and would be drawn in on IRC/etc, and the playerbase could get behind something technically impractical.
