  1. I agree, it could get really convoluted easily. I'll use my own town Vinhaven as an example, we could be considered a well developed town as we typically get a lot of done in a very short amount of time, but as everyone knows by now the town becomes more or less abandoned after a month or two (to the point we now intentionally make the place look like ruins lol). Theoretically I could apply for a portal, as Vinhaven has been around for quite some time and we have experience with managing portals before. But then what happens when the inevitable activity dies down? We would have developed all our portal roads and stuff by then, but we would still be considered abandoned. Even I'm not sure If I would give a portal to myself. There's absolutely no guarantee that any town will/won't be abandoned. And then of course you would have people bickering about who actually receives portals, "Why do they get [X] portal and we can't get [X] portal, when [TOWN] has been here since rev [X]!" which is a whole other monster of issues. I think portals as we have them now is as good as we can get without causing too many issues.
  2. Troop pls, give info ༼ つ ಥ_ಥ ༽つ We go way back, let me in on your wizard Padmin secrets.
  3. I would be in favor of this, but it would have to be executed well, we already have a ton of suggestions floating around with no real direction. I'm all for trying new things across the board with the servers.
  4. Your idea seems like a very reasonable solution, I would be in favor of such a system. My only extra thought is what happens when we actually get down to voting. What if we are split very evenly, or if there is demand for more options to vote on? I'm sure other issues may arise, but for this idea to work we would need a solid mindset on going in. Do we want to say the vote is final? While I don't know, I could see potential backlash and "drama" (god I hate that word) if a vocal group doesn't agree with the vote. Just some thoughts.
  5. That sounds very interesting, we may need another thread just for that when the time comes. (although screw skeleton blinding, I have enough issues with them lol)
  6. I typically stop playing a rev when personal issues arise and I can no longer find the time to play, which leads me to find other things to do, which then makes me forget about minecraft when I do have time to play it again. For the most part I feel "left behind" in a sense when I am able to return, I see no one in my town or people I typically talk to on anymore which quickly makes me lose motivation to keep building stuff. I would start something fresh, but then I may as well wait for a new rev in my opinion. All that being said, this is what I think: 1. What do you mean by slowing down progression? Minecraft has enough tedious mechanics in my opinion, I doubt adding more would help. However I am very interested in what you have in mind for alterations to the map. The last few P maps have been woefully boring, I think we can all agree that vanilla generation just isn't cutting it. There was a whole other thread about this so I won't talk about that. I am in favor of random custom dungeons, in fact, random custom anything would be interesting. Maybe find some cool ruins to explore and get some loot, or unique landmarks to make the map feel special, I don't know, but some thing like that would be nice. 2. I would be in favor of official community events, I don't think they would really affect the spirit of the server, but that really depends on the event I suppose. Anything to shake things up every month or so would be nice. I know I would participate in events if I have the time. 3. I think the rev length right now is fine, just needs an actual time table. Right now it's "maybe it's this time, or maybe it's that time", many of us have expressed we want clarification. I personally think there should be a 4-5 month maximum for revs, but that's just me.
  7. Lol I didn't even think about that when making them, I just did it because they were complimentary colors and looked nice.
  8. Wasn't sure what direction to go, so here's a few ideas I was playing around with. The color scheme is just one I was toying with, I can change it if people want. I may submit more if my schedule allows for it. [Dropbox for psd files]
  9. A few quick questions: Is there a deadline for this contest? What is the maximum number of submissions per person? Is there any sort of style that would be more favorable than others? (color scheme, font, etc.) Do the admins have a particular direction/theme in mind outside of a general gaming theme? I just want to narrow things down a bit, makes working on this stuff easier.

    PvE Map Poll

I would love to see a map generated differently than the last few revisions, the last few maps have been rather plain in my opinion. I think a custom made map like the one we had rev 11(I think, might have been rev 10) would be cool to have again. Another suggestion would be the realistic world generation mod or something else that modifies how terrain is generated. I say let's mix it up this rev!
  11. I disagree with this, that link is how I found these servers, and in turn I brought several friends to these servers. For the most part I would agree that we should drift away from Reddit, but I personally feel that we would end up losing more than we would gain. I think we could advertise as Nerd.nu (a reddit server). or something like that, keeping the Reddit side of things on the low end in comparison to the Nerd.nu assets, which should be more prominent.
  12. Games I would play here would be: Team Fortress 2- For reasons stated above, I also enjoy this game, despite sucking at it. Unturned- A cool little free to play game that is like a cross between DayZ and Minecraft. We would probably be better off going with just DayZ or an Arma mod, but for a free game this one fills that open world survival niche pretty well in my opinion. Maps are a bit small from last I played, so not sure how it would work out there, but hey, the game is free and fairly low-end friendly. The Hidden- Basically one player gets to be a semi-invisible monster while the other players are a spec op team hunting it down. This game is also free, though it requires downloading the source engine from steam for it to run. This game is pretty fun from my experience with it, I'm sure some of you have seen some youtubers play it a while back when it was gaining popularity. Not sure how it would run on low-end systems however. Gmod- I don't know anything about the drama that took place, but Gmod is awesome. The amount of variety in game modes alone makes it worth considering in my opinion. There's a few others I would like to see such as Space Engineers(minecraft in space!) or Mount and Blade Warband(good old medieval murder), but I doubt we have enough people who would be interested in those.
  13. That's what I'm getting at here, I think we can incorporate something successful while keeping our own style.
  14. I only mentioned removing the server lobby because you seemed opposed to it, how else would people access the new server without a lobby or commands while on the other servers? And personally I don't think it would be interrupting anything, it would be entirely voluntary, we wouldn't be advertising based on a games server alone. I have been playing minecraft for a long ass time as well, I have literally server hopped for over a year before staying at these servers for a bout 2 or 3 years now, before all that I frequented other servers since multilayer was released for minecraft. I have played on towny servers, mcmmo servers, faction servers, no rules servers, hardcore survival servers, and many other various modded servers. So trust me, I'm not making all these suggestions without some form of prior knowledge. I will agree with your point about the average player's attention span to some degree, but my own personal experience proves to me that people really do like picking one, reliable, friendly server that they know they can log into every day for some guaranteed fun, even if it is only for a little while at a time. Well, that was the entire point of this whole series of posts, I knew my idea had some flaws in it, I didn't know which flaws, but through discussion we can learn them and work to sort them out. You won't be hurting my feelings by opposing my ideas, I love good old fashioned honest discussion. That being said, I will try my best to sort out the "not a standalone" miscommunication we seem to be having. Yes, the new server would be a separate entity, I never meant to say it wasn't. Resources would have to be put aside to run it I know, but how much resources it would take to do so, I do not know, only the admins would know, so I wait for if they will comment with more information on that. When I keep saying "not a standalone", I mean the games server won't be advertised as G.Nerd.nu alongside P, C, and S. Yes, it will be it's own server, but it will act in a different fashion than our current ones, sort of like event or chaos, they are still hosted on the same hardware, but are different entities with a different set of parameters. However, I still don't how it would be best for this server to be set up, the cross server queuing was just a suggestion, I'm not really sure of how else to set up a server like that without forcing people to log into it directly and take away from the other servers. Let me ask you a couple things: What exactly do you think would be detrimental to these servers with this idea? What good, do you think could come of my ideas? If this idea were to be implemented, how would you implement it? I'm not an unreasonable person, I'm a game designer, it's what I'm going to college for. So far I'm having a lot of fun debating these ideas, I appreciate your directly oppositional points.
  15. I never said I knew if the servers could handle this or not, for all I know it's not possible, but I am waiting for if an admin will respond with more information before contemplating that further. Merely examples, I went with those because they are the most familiar to me, and probably to others as well. There's tons of games plugins out there, I'm sure we could find an interesting variety of them for the server. Personally, I don't think either you nor I can answer that, there's a lot of different types of people out there. Who's to say they won't be interested? If 1 or 2 people stuck around out of every 10, 15, 20, 100 people, would it really be that bad? I know I used to server hop a ton before I found these servers, there were a few that had set-ups similar to what I am suggesting, but they did not have the community our servers had, hence why I didn't stick around. Most of these other servers are like you said, cold, quick, cheap fun. Which is exactly why I think we can incorporate an idea like this an an enhancement to our already great servers. If people stay, it's because this is Nerd.nu, and not one of the servers you mention. So how do you suggest we build interest in the server then? And I think you are missing my main point, this sever would not be stand alone, you would need to be on one of the existing servers to queue up for it. It may be a separate server in a physical sense yes, but in practice it will be a cross-server feature that ties them all together. Heck, we could even make it so there is no lobby for this new server, and that everything is accessed as commands while playing on our current ones. If anything, I think this is at least something worth trying as an experiment.
