  1. Then re-read my comment, and replace "few blocks" with "few hundred blocks." The issue is the same.
  2. I agree, Denevian, when the bans are for major rule breaking. But don't think of temp-bans as "get out of ban free," think of them as a "time-out." If someone is being homophobic in chat, or not replanting crops, make them sit in "time-out" for a while, and suggest that they read the rules. Of course, if it's xray or something, then resort to a ban-until-appeal. Most new players don't know how it works on nerd. Nerd does it differently than 99.9% of the other servers out there. A newly banned player just thinks "Wow, I got perm banned for saying 'fag,' they must take the rules extremely seriously. I can't believe they don't even give you a second chance!" They see the link to appeal, but don't realize that they can appeal even if they're guilty. (Most people think "appeal" means "I was banned unfairly," not "ask to come back, even if you were banned for a legitimate reason"). This is the story I've heard time and time again, when speaking to players on other servers, is that they tried playing on nerd, but they got perm banned for breaking a few blocks few hundred blocks, so now they're playing on <insert popular server here>. The fact that the vast majority of players never appeal supports this idea.
  3. No it isn't EDIT: I think the fact that nerd has more than 100,000 bans after only being open 5 years might mean that we should revisit our banning policy. Possibly implementing temporary bans?
  4. Adding killstreaks and stuff would be interesting, but would do nothing to address the issues that I listed. The idea of doing this would be to encourage people to try to avoid dying, by wearing armor, carrying potions, etc. The only type of pvp it would discourage would be unarmored people running around getting ganked. If we want to encourage PvP, we should take out random spawns.
  5. Well, there's always the option of only applying this stuff to people above a certain playtime, maybe an hour or two. So you can starve to death a couple times before actually getting punished.
  6. Deathban is an interesting thought. Another option would be to give the person that died some sort of negative potion effect, like Mining Fatigue or Blindness.
  7. Hello Everyone! I've been thinking that Survival would benefit from adding a consequence to dying. If there were a consequence to dying, then: 1. People would be motivated to wear armor. At the moment, it's better to not wear armor than to risk losing it, if you can just respawn at your bed next to where you died. In fact, wearing Protection 3+ armor at the moment is "punished" by making it so that you can lose your head. 2. Adding bounties (which has been discussed) would make more sense. If we added bounties to the server as it currently exists, then if someone ever sets a bounty on you, you can just have your friends kill you, and split the bounty. If there were a consequence to dying, it would prevent this. 3. You'd actually have to make farms, instead of committing suicide to refill your hunger bar. 4. People wouldn't abuse the random spawns to fast travel (killing yourself over and over until you're close to where you want to be). I thought I'd make this thread to see if people agreed with this idea, and maybe had some ideas about what the consequence could be.
  8. Civcraft isn't my favorite idea, but it's better than doing nothing. In a happy coincidence, the CivCraft plugin was just open-sourced yesterday! https://github.com/netizen539/civcraft So it would be very easy for nerd to use that plugin or fork it.
  9. You paint with broad strokes. I have never attempted to intimidate you, ever. I complain about Survival a lot, because I (still) really enjoy the server and the friends I've made here, and want to see it succeed. And I still don't know what incidents you're talking about. I've personally offered my help with multiple issues on multiple occasions, but have always been rejected. I've reported many dupe glitches, hackers, and even submitted a couple Pull Requests to nerd's github. What more can one do as a player? Looking over the suggestions, 99% of them would have to be implemented by an admin. If I could help make those changes, I would. EDIT: MrLoud and I have taken this to IRC, which is public, but can allow this thread to remain sort of on topic, if it can.
  10. I am absolutely thrilled to hear that, I hope it happens. If you would like to speak to me about this in PM, please do, because I honestly don't know what problems you're talking about. The only thing I've spoken to you about is a desire to see major changes happen to S, because what's happening now isn't working. I hope this meeting is a step in that direction.
  11. That's just a result of S players caring about the server they play on. We've played here for many years, made good friends here, so we get justifiably upset when we see the server being run into the ground.
  12. My post was a response to twilexis, who said: I was simply stating that it's not up to the players to "get their shit together," but rather, it's up to the admins. I don't know how you got the impression that I don't want the meeting to work. I want the meeting to work, and for S to draw in a large playerbase, and for it to be a fun server to play again. However, there have been a lot of meetings on the same subject in the past, and nothing came of them. So, yes, I do not honestly think it will work, but I hope it does.
  13. Really? Take a look at this: http://forty-two.nu/mcpublicstatus/s.nerd.nu.graphs.html Does that look like you have your shit together? If you'd like me to go into specifics about how you've mismanaged survival, I can. Or I can save it for this meeting of yours.
  14. Were you around for the revision where they removed enchantments? Did you enjoy it?
  15. What's your opinion on the rules governing player behavior on survival? Do you think there should be more rules restricting player behavior, or fewer?
  16. "Knowledge of Java and programming is an advantage but not essential." And it's only 6 credit-hours. Sounds like just a fun course to pick up a couple credits. In college, I got 3 credits for taking jazzercise. Also, running a Minecraft server is easy as shit.
  17. When 1.8 comes out, Mojang has made drastic changes to the enchanting system. I think we should use that new system, because it resolves a lot of these arguments. Firstly, it requires fewer levels to enchant. Basically there's now an enchanting level requirement and an enchanting level cost. So you have to BE at level 30 to get a high-tier enchant, but it only costs 2-3 levels. This makes it easy to return to level 30 (from 27/28) and do another enchantment. This could take the place of our XP boost. Secondly, it gives you a hint as to what enchantment you're going to get. It'll say something like "Sharpness...," which will let you know that you'll get the sharpness enchant, but not whether it's Sharpness 4, Sharpness 4 Fire 2, Sharpness 3 Knockback 1, etc, etc. I think this is a good compromise, it could take the place of Enchantism, but not be a total crapshoot. Thirdly, it costs one lapis to do an enchantment, which finally gives a use for lapis other than blue dye. TL;DR: My vote is for just waiting until 1.8's enchanting system, and removing the XP boost and Enchantism then.
  18. More questions: Why did you step down from being an admin? What's your side of the story re: you getting banned for a really long time?
  19. What's your family like? Do you have a girlfriend? What's her family like? Does she have a brother? What's he like?
  20. It was a joke Shanty. It's wordplay on the two meanings of free, as in Liberated or Worthless.
  21. Do you mean http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harp_Lager ? We have that in America too, it's decent.
