[PMC] Rules-at-a-glance proposal

Recommended Posts

So as suggested and promoted by various people, I've written a draft of rules-at-a-glance that would complement the full (and true) ruleset. This would be helpful for the casual player and aims for very swift readability while still conveying the intent of the rules. The rules-at-a-glance would also have hyperlinks to elaborations in the full rules, or even better, subsection expansions for each bullet point here. I think the complete ruleset (and dispersed policies) also needs a full review and consolidation, but that is a bit more monumental task. Please let me know your suggestions or thoughts here.

I like this but think a few things could be simplified down a bit as well as a few minor things added. My thoughts:

Besides those few minor changes this looks great in my opinion.

Not to nit-pick too much, but why not use "exploiting bugs" in lieu of "cheating"? Seems like more direct language.

Are we assuming alt doxxing is implied within doxxing or no?

Any reason we've moved away from the phrase "excessive trolling" or do we think "disruptive arguments/discussions" covers that? I think the two have a little overlap but are different in severity.

Otherwise I like this setup; it's much more straightforward than previously. Great job Scher and Switch! I'll look over later and update this comment more if I have any other questions/suggestions.

This is something I'm curious about- it doesn't have anything to do with this set of rules specifically, but how should it be approached if players are having a dispute in genchat that is excessively disruptive? Assuming both players are violating the first rule, to what extent should we go to mediate the issue?

I know it gets worse at the beginning of each revision but I'm wondering if there isn't something that can be done to help differentiate between players with legitimate grievances and players just picking fights.

Depending what they are arguing about, it usually normal to tell them to knock it off and after a few warnings if they don't stop mute them, or you can ask them to take it to PM or Clanchat.

I think this "at a glance" ruleset is fantastic.

I am of the belief that shorter, more concise rules are always better- thats why I condensed the rules on C to 5 signs instead of 20+ when I was a cadmin, and why I am all for simple, bullet point policies.  With that in mind, I don't agree with using these rules and linking to a long essay form list of rules.

Administrative actions and bans will always be at the discretion of the mod or, if put up for review, admins, so I don't see the reason for having a long description.  "No bigotry / hate speech"  means no bigotry or hate speech.  Why does this need to be expanded?   I don't think, in a game of blocks, we need to link to a more verbose, expanded set of rules.    Having long, verbose rules only leads to rule lawyering because by making more descriptive rules that cover specific cases you just make it easy to operate outside those specific cases and come back with "well you said I couldn't do this, but I did this so bad ban aboose aboose."

How about we just have these simple, easy to understand rules and leave it at that?   Why make long rule lawyer versions for the 1% of players who will use it to be a pain in the ass?  If they want to lawyer, let them do it in their ban appeal and and tell them how it is.

I guess the point I'm getting at is this:

These concise rules are great for 99% of players.  For the other 1% of players that need long drawn out descriptions- fuck em.  We are not here to cater to the trouble makers, we're here to keep the general server population happy and have fun.

As a point of general principle, to me eliminating the longer set of rules and replacing it with a more concise but less specific set of rules will open up questions of interpretation.  While discretion is expected in some cases (and in some cases explicitly legal) it is not something I'd like to see used liberally - regardless of what the rules may claim, over-reliance on discretion to handle issues feels unacceptably arbitrary.

I like the idea of consolidating the longer ruleset to something more readable/understandable/less ambiguous, and if after doing so it does come down to the same set of short and concise rules, then awesome.  But I treat it as one of the ultimate authorities to consult in times of dispute because it is the most specific, and using rules designed more as a summary as that ultimate authority would run counter to that purpose.

As a quick reference though, having a shorter and concise set of rules as an easier-to-read summary of the longer ones would be excellent for new players, being much easier to read and understand.  I took a cursory glance down the list of universal and P rules and think it looks great so far.

jchance summarized this perfectly, it's always great to have things short and sweet. With having the short rules on the servers I feel like it would be easier for the appealing folks to read through and feel more comfortable about coming back. We don't want to look stuck up!

Someone recently told me he veered away from these servers in the past because the rules practically stated "No building allowed." He said it was horribly rigid and just felt like it was all too strict and too damn drawn out.

For the 1%, we should definitely keep the long drawn out rules just for those special people.

I have always advocated for simpler and not as complex rules and that is part of why I was not fond of the Community Interaction Policy. This may not be a popular opinion but I vote to abolish the CIP as it doesn't do anything besides add more rules on to our already monstrous pile of rules. The only thing I think we should keep from it is the forum warning system.

I agree with both jchance and SirTacoFace, we don't need a massive rule list for the 1% but we also need a page to give examples/define what something is. I propose we split all the rules and community interaction policy into 2 categories. First being the Rules-At-A-Glance where they are short and to the point, and then the Rule-Definitions (or some other name) page where we explain what things are. Such as it gives example of bigotry speech or griefing and lists of banned items, ETC.

Going back a bit to the Community Interaction Policy what was the real purpose for implementing it? To explain exactly what doing certain things would result in? If we are going to do a complete rule overhaul then we need to either abolish the CIP or rewrite it as well. I am for abolishing it as it doesn't add anything new besides make the current rules even lengthier and I can definitely say that if I'm just a regular player I don't want to read a entire document on the rules of the community. Most of that stuff should be pretty common knowledge. We have catered long enough to the rule benders and the rule pushers and the rule lawyering. Enough of it. They can either follow the rules or they can not and be banned. The CIP does nothing but cater to the rule lawyering by trying to prevent it. Just follow the rules it isn't that difficult.

The community interaction policy was written so that:

1.  It was vague enough to avoid lawyering (Its says I can't do "this" so I did "this").  Instead of naming specific little things, it outlined broad categories of shit that is "not ok."

2.  It had teeth so we could remove people who needed to be gone.  There is no "you'll get a 3 day ban for this" and more "We're going to keep escalating this until you're gone."

The people who troll the forums don't like it and I'm 100% fine with that.   Those are the people who it was designed to control if we need to.  I know there will be some discussion about if head admins should have that power, but I should point out that its been used only a few times, and one of those times the head admins didn't agree in its application and we overturned the ban before anyone even saw it, which is why nobody even knows about it.  We don't use it all willy-nilly.

Alright, I'm extrapolating from this to make a full replacement of the current rules by using short form headers (as above) with (potentially collapsible) elaborations for specificity. Short form are top level bullet points, long form are sub-bullets.

Saving this as a draft, will update again to finish up, pending rules rewrites from server admins as desired.

So I can't get the forum to format this as desired without retyping the whole thing, so here's a link to a [redacted] of it. We should be able to get this reviewed in the next week or two, and hopefully have it up on a new dedicated nerd.nu/rules page (not on the wiki) for readability and prominence. Note that there are a few new things included in here, particularly rules relating to the S shop and an official rule on "ban baiting".

I juxtaposed the current P ruleset with the new summary to see how closely the new one matches the old one, and found some wording that might alter their meanings (note that the Padmins may decide to change these later; these are just things I noticed when looking for preservation of rules):

"Land that has been significantly improved through road/plot making or terraforming can be protected at admin discretion." - the current ruleset simply says "our discretion" which implies not necessarily admins only; would also recommend wording of "our discretion." (If, in practice, these are all done by admin only discretion, then I take this back)

"This includes any named mobs, mobs that are enclosed/restrained, claimed pet-type mobs and villagers." - maybe add "Hostile mob "pets" must be enclosed such that they cannot harm players who pass by [and players cannot enter the enclosure without breaking in]." (The bracketed part is unwritten but enforced through precedent - if someone can enter the enclosure through doors or falling in or something similar, it also nulls the possibility of refund if the mob is killed. Unsure if that should be added in, but it is in line with current policy.)

I changed 'admin discretion' to 'staff discretion' since 'our discretion' is unfavorably ambiguous, and added ""Hostile mob" pets must be enclosed such that players cannot enter and be harmed (without breaking in)."

If no one else has further suggestions or objections, we can roll this out pronto.

In the meanwhile, if someone has the time to go through the new rule setup and convert it to wiki markup to replace what's currently at wiki.nerd.nu/rules, that would be greatly appreciated.

**Use of endportal, /spawnme, etc. to re-enter no-PvP zones in order to avoid PvP encounters
*No abuse of server protections, including LWC and WorldGuard
**No use of LWC-locked blocks for the purpose of base defense, obstruction, or any other use besides protecting items within the locked block. Valid protection extends to locking containers involved in larger ‘machine-type’ builds such as auto-furnaces or auto-brewers.
**Admins reserve the right to remove LWC-locked blocks or WorldGuard regions used for base defense.
*Any public containers may be looted.
**Unlocked containers themselves may not be taken nor locked, but their contents may be taken.
*All beacons must be protected with WorldGuard, requested via a /modreq for protection, made standing at your beacon.
**Non-protected beacons will not be rolled back.
**Abusing beacon protection in any way will result in a ban.
*Shop Rules:
**No non-shop items in chest. This includes furnaces, hoppers, brewing stands, enchanting tables (at this time), etc.
**You are permitted to have 3 storage chests for stocking purposes. Shop chests are subject to random checks to ensure compliance.
**Non-storage chests are only allowed to contain buyable and sellable items and must be labelled appropriately; everything else must be in storage chests. **Non-compliance with these rules will result in a notice and if not corrected, the removal of the chest and items. Multiple offenses will result in the removal of the offending shop owner’s shop with no refund.
**No player traps of any sort.
**You may buy the shop directly next to you and request to have the wall removed. Corner shops may not have the walls removed to combine adjacent shops.
**You may not sell any items that are in the admin shop or items that craft into those items.
**You can find a tutorial of how to set up your shop at the entrance of the shop, for any additional questions please PM an admin.
**You may modreq for an admin to put barrier blocks in your store in the shop world. However, this block placement is at the discretion of the admins.
**You may purchase a spawner from the shop for 40,000 coins (subject to change) and using /modreq at the location with the mob type of your choice.
::*The spawner can be placed anywhere of your choice in the overworld
::*You cannot have the spawner spawn any passive mobs, nether mobs, endermen, guardians, witches or slimes. Any other mobs are allowed.
*In order to claim land you must build a border around what land you want to claim. Borders must be on the surface of the land in order to be considered valid (no underground borders).
**A claim extends from bedrock to sky limit. However, mine-shafts that intersect with this claim are not considered griefing.
**If your claim goes without use for a long enough period of time, an admin can choose to give it to a user who requests it.
**Admins reserve the right to resolve land disputes in a manner they deem appropriate.
