Wiki updates

I agree nerd.nu/rules should be updated, but for a different reason. New players don't want to read a 2700 word rule page AND a 1500 word Community Interaction Policy before playing on a block stacking server. It is silly to expect them to do so. The admins need to make a better rule list that fits on one easy to read page and that is less intimidating to new players.

The rules in-game are simplified enough, the wiki is basically a detailed expanded version of that. I'm sure you just ran right by the rule boards though.

The entire section under Mobs within the PVE Title contains absolutely no rules, just statements. Much of the C banned block list is outdated. This and other linked rule pages should be locked as they have been subject to abuse in the past. http://www.redditpublic.com/index.php?title=List_of_approved_client_mods&oldid=22720 This edit right here was created by Trevorman simply so he could justify kicking me multiple times from c.nerd.nu when I joined with a chat app(despite it clearly being a list for survival, and my chat app client threw no NCP warnings) He only knew because the client announced that "username joined using appname for devicename" as the first message...

Perhaps it does detail rules, but it still needs cleaning up and refreshing as I've stated several times now with little to no support.

The wiki is editable by anyone that registers afaik. Feel free to make corrections.

That page is/was* protected to prevent griefers from spamming random shit on them. With that being said, I don't think that's an issue anymore, so unprotecting it (letting registered users edit it) would be feasible in my mind as long as the information on that page remains the same as before.

*it was originally protected back in 2011 or so IIRC

Nope, I have an account, I can't edit the main rules page. I can however edit the pages relating to it such as the Survival approved client list... Which again was subjected to abuse. So contrary to what Avada asked, I still believe it should be re-written. But return to a locked state.

My main concern is that nerd.nu/rules is where mods and admins link people to in their ban appeals to read the rules before being unbanned.

Consider this scenario: a new player is banned for breaking a rule. They are directed to the wiki rules page and read them, are unbanned and start playing again, conscious of the rules and even referring back to them to ensure what they're doing is okay. They are then banned for a new rule that hasn't been updated on the wiki rules page, and then they leave the community because of the lack of consistency.

Is this something we want?

There isn't really a very effective way to 'fix' the wiki per se, however it should be common practice to keep the Rules section updated, as it's one of the most important parts of the wiki overall. Every single little rule change and policy change needs to be reflected as soon as possible on the wiki.

Blah blah blah "should" be done.

Revving in neutral here.  We should focus more on who should do it and when and how often.  Probably Head Admins and Now and Regularly (maybe at the end of each admin meeting?).  Shoot them PMs, get their attention.

I think that's a good idea, and I will add start adding it to our agenda for the meetings.

I think Aypop has the right idea here, if anyone thinks the rules could be shorter and/or something could be worded better, make the changes and post it here in the thread. I will work on updating the wiki page taking into account everyone's suggestions posted here.

Here is a copy of the rules if anyone would like to edit them:

Universal
This rules list cannot possibly hope to cover all instances of behavior that is detrimental to the servers or community, thus the admins reserve the right to warn, kick, or ban players deemed to be detrimental, as well as the right to form new rules when needed. Admins also reserve the right to reset player data as needed.

These rules apply to all servers, including the subreddit, mumble server, IRC channel and forum where applicable

*Please be respectful and civil towards your fellow players. Harassment of any kind will not be tolerated.
*No sexism, racism, homophobia or any type of hate speech.
*Excessively negative comments or disruptive arguments/discussions in global chat are not tolerated. This includes, but is not limited to, discussions concerning politics, religion, issues with staff/policy, issues with specific other players, or validity of bans. Any and all such conversations should be conducted in/moved to private channels, such as /msg, clanchat, or /mail.
*Players using modifications to change gameplay may be asked to stop, kicked, or banned with little or no warning depending on the severity of the situation. This includes, but is not limited to: noclip, invincibility, speed modification, xray/ore-detection, and duping hacks. (Note that Survival has its own list of approved client mods; see below.)
*No griefing, including but not limited to:
**Destroying blocks placed by other players.
**Placing blocks or leaving inappropriate signs on other player’s structures.
**Flooding structures.
**Spamming items.
**Destroying crops without replanting.
**Note that this rule is not applicable on the chaos server.
*No "grief-baiting". This means that players cannot try to get other players in trouble by tricking/forcing them to destroying structures in an attempt to get the player warned or banned.
*No attempts to circumvent any protections on the server, including but not limited to the server script, LWC (Chest protection), WorldGuard (Block protection), and No Cheat Plus.
*No use of bugs or exploits (e.g.: item duping).
*Redstone mechanisms, dispensers, and pistons may be removed at moderator discretion; abuse of these (e.g. lag inducing) may result in a ban.
*No sharing of illegal content.
*Do not spam chat. This includes but it not limited to:
**Advertising non-nerd.nu servers.
** Roleplaying in general chat.
**Trolling in chat.
*Do not abuse/spam commands.
*No posting of other players' personal information without their explicit permission in general chat or to anyone else on the servers, including but not limited to: names, photographs, addresses, and social networking profiles.
*No NSFW constructions (e.g. giant phallic buildings).
*No offensive or inappropriate skins. Failure to change when asked by a mod may result in a ban until it is changed.
*Absolutely no impersonation of staff members.
*We are not in the business of protecting players' alt accounts - but if a player has made it clear that they don't want their alt accounts publicized, then you need to respect that. Taunting players with the names of their alt accounts, particularly if those players have made it clear that they are uncomfortable with this, will be treated as harassment.
*If you are banned under one account you cannot play on other accounts on the server while the ban is still in effect.
*You are responsible for your own account. Anything that is done on your account will be viewed as done by you, and will be treated as such.
*Any rules placed at spawn on the servers supersede the rules here as they will generally be more up-to-date.

Banning policy
*Violation of any of the rules can result in a warning, kick, or ban from all nerd servers and services.
*In most cases, an attempt at establishing communication will be made prior to a ban. However, depending on the situation, you may not be warned before a ban is issued.
*You may appeal bans by following the appeals process at: http://nerd.nu/appeal
*If you are banned, please do not make a subreddit post or it may be removed & ignored.
*We will not discuss ban appeals in the in-game chat.
*Lifting bans is done entirely at the discretion of the mods / admins, and conditions may be imposed if a ban is lifted.
*Alt Account Banning Policy

Chaos
General
*No rules, except the universal server rules (minus griefing). No hacking or client mods, specifically.
*Admins reserve the right to clean up anything making the game unplayable, including making spawn inescapable by any means.
*The map should be considered volatile and may potentially be reset at any time

Banned Items
*None

Creative
General
*All MCPublic universal rules still apply.

Banned Items
*Blocks you can ask a mod or an admin to place for you:
**Flowing water (#8)
**Flowing lava (#10)
**End portal (#119)
**Item frame (#389)
*Blocks and items that are either disabled and/or will not be placed:
**Stationary water (#9)
**Stationary lava (#11)
**Mob spawner (#52)
**Portal (#90)
**Dragon egg (#122)
**Command block (#137)
**Snowball (#332)

**Egg (#344)
**Fishing rod (#346)
**Eye of Ender (#381)
**Spawn eggs (#383)
**Bottle of enchanting (#384)
**Mobs of any kind - passive and hostile
**Drops of any kind
***Attempts to use such items may result in a kick.
*Growth is also disabled on the server.

PvE
General
*All MCPublic universal rules still apply.
*No killing or trapping other players in any manner except in clearly marked PVP arenas. PvP arenas must be clearly marked, completely enclosed, and access-restricted builds. This means that the area needs to only be accessible via iron doors that require a button press to enter. These entrances must be marked with signs stating that it is a PvP area, and that players enter at their own risk. The PvP-enabled area may not exceed 100x100 blocks, and may not interact with other PvP areas in any way. Enabling of the PvP flag will be done entirely at the discretion of server admins. Indirect forms of PvP are also not allowed (e.g. using a mob to kill another player).
*Do not leave large numbers of items on the ground from mining, farms, grinders, etc. This is detrimental to the performance and stability of the server.
**Grinders and automatic farms should be protected and must have an incinerator (destroys drops when no one is using, like cactus or lava)
*The map should be open for exploration. Do not restrict access to buildings or land (this includes land claims, homes, grinders, etc). Rare exceptions would include: a structure to hold villagers for trading; killing box of iron grinders (assuming iron is available to the public); animal farms.
*Unless specific permission is given, killing or stealing mobs that are "owned" by other players is considered griefing. Mobs are considered owned if they are in clearly marked and enclosed areas. This applies to hostile mobs if and only if they are contained so that anyone in the area can not be harmed by the mob (e.g. a skeleton should not be able to shoot players walking by). Also, players are not allowed to kill a horse being ridden by another player. Mobs found in the wild may be killed or captured.

Mobs
We have a plugin written by our Tech Admins to handle mobs to ensure server stability.
*See the wiki page Wiki PvE Mob Plugin
*See also the Subreddit post annoucing it MCPublic PvE Mob Post

Structures
*Don't build very close to other players' structures; be sure to leave some space. Buildings that violate this rule may be moved to a new location without warning.
*If you have a large project such as a city or megabuild, expand in directions that do not come into conflict with other players. Exhaust all available unopposed routes before expanding near already established players. If you must expand in the vicinity of other players, speak with them first and see if they are willing to participate in your project. Leave signs, /mail send, or /msg them in chat. If you are unable to come to an agreement, contact a moderator for assistance.
*Scaffolding, 1x1 towers, and other temporary builds should be removed as soon as no longer needed. Such structures may be removed by moderators at any time.
*Be respectful of the map and do not mar the experience or view for other players. Certain “very low quality” structures including but not limited to cobble/netherrack boxes, floating skyrails, and abandoned incomplete builds may be removed if they significantly impact the surrounding area in a negative way. Such removal will be done entirely at the discretion of server admins.

Nether/End
*All server rules still apply in the Nether and End.
*The End should be considered stable and will likely not be reset during any particular map revision.
*The Nether should be considered stable and will likely not be reset during any particular map revision.

Protections
*Protections exist solely to prevent grief and other unauthorized edits.
*Protections are not used for "claiming land." Mods will only protect builds (houses, rail, farms, etc.) and clearly established large projects, such as cities
**Requests to protect empty land or to protect a very large buffer around a structure will be denied.
**Land that has been significantly improved through road/plot making or terraforming can be protected at our discretion.
*Hastily made structures that serve no purpose other than to lay claim to an area will not be protected.
*Modreqs asking for the protection of land that has had no or minimal edits made to it will be denied.
*Protections generally will cover the entire area above a structure (to sky limit) and about 10 blocks below the lowest floor.
**We will not protect to bedrock unless your structure extends down that far. Underground resources are considered to be public property. Mines, drop shafts, etc., will not be protected.

Banned Items
*TNT (mods will not place)
*Water and lava buckets only place static liquid. If you need water or lava made to flow, please make a /modreq. Mods and admins reserve the right to deny flowing water or lava.
*Portals - players may not build or light portals. Official portals are provided at spawn and in the wilderness.

survival
General
*All MCPublic universal rules still apply.
*Killing animals owned by other players is allowed, however if the animals are enclosed in a room or fenced in area then you must leave at least two of each kind. (e.g. you may kill thirty cows belonging to another player as long as two cows remain in the enclosed area, and you may kill one hundred sheep belonging to the same player as long as two sheep remain in the enclosed area, etc.) This rule does not protect villagers.
*Only client modifications explicitly allowed on the Survival [

  1. ] may be used.
*Any use of xray/ore-detection will result in an immediate 1 month long ban and rollback of all edits.
*Although bad mouthing and trolling is a part of the survival server experience, excessive direct verbal (textual) attacks against a person will not be tolerated. (Remember, from the universal rules: Please be respectful and civil towards your fellow players.)
*Accusations of rule breaking made in open chat will not be tolerated. Make a /modreq in-game or contact a moderator if you have concerns that another player is disobeying server rules.
*Please don't complain about lag or server restarts. It's a fact of life, our technical admins are constantly working to smooth the experience, and repeated complaints get annoying.
*No inappropriate clan names or tags.

    ===PvP===
*Players are allowed to make a small number of temporary edits for the purpose of gaining access to other players' bases, such as for PvP or exploration. However, all such edits must be fixed immediately; this rule does not justify any form of griefing or base modification.
*No spawn camping. This includes respawn points at beds.
*Using login as a function of PvP is not allowed. This includes, but is not limited to:
    **Logging off to avoid PvP.
**Logging off while engaged in combat.
**Relogging to gain an advantage such as invulnerability for PvP or to prevent fall damage while being chased.
**Timing logins to attack players at specific locations.
**Playing with multiple accounts to give yourself a PvP-related advantage
    * Using any method of teleportation (such as the end portal, /spawnme etc.) to re-enter no-pvp zones in order to avoid pvp encounters will result in a ban.

    ===Protections===
    * No abuse of server protections, including but not limited to LWC and Worldguard
**No use of LWC-locked blocks for the purpose of base defense or any other use than to protect the items within the locked block. Valid protection extends to locking containers involved in larger, 'machine'-type builds such as auto-brewers and auto-furnaces.
**We will investigate any edge cases and aim to develop and uphold an objective handling of any cases which are deemed to be excessive use and/or abuse of protection plugins.
**Admins reserve the right to remove LWC-locked blocks or WorldGuard regions used for base defense. Chests and other lockable items may not be used to obstruct movement or access to an area.
*Anything unlocked may be looted. You are not to take someones unlocked block(griefing), nor lock it, but you may take the contents within.
*All beacons must be protected with WorldGuard. To get a protection on your beacon, just make a modreq beside your beacon asking for protection and a mod will protect the beacon along with the beacon base as soon as they can. Abusing your beacon protection for base defense is not acceptable and will result in a ban.

    ===Land Claims===
*In order to claim land you must build a border around what land you want to claim. Borders must be on the surface of the land in order to be considered valid (no underground borders).
*A claim extends from bedrock to skylimit. However, mine-shafts that intersect with this claim are not considered griefing.
*If your claim goes without use for a long enough period of time an admin can choose to give it to a user who requests it.
*Admins reserve the right to resolve land disputes in a manner they deem appropriate.

    ===Banned Items===
    *Hopper Minecarts
    *Maps placed in item frames

    ===Other Gameplay===

*Please see all available user commands.
