The Brand of nerd.nu

Recommended Posts

While nerd.nu is a community built around minecraft (and other games), it still comes down to being a business. Donations from players support the server, which in theory brings in more players and more donations to continue to last. This model is good for the three free to play servers, but with talk of branching out into other servers and even other games, this model could easily fail.  [please correct anything I've said here if I was mistaken]

So why not push the nerd.nu brand? There are easy ways to get the name of nerd.nu out there, while bringing in a profit, and still being free to play. Here are some easy examples:

- T-shirts: http://teespring.com/designs/32fnu7/edit#!/fwwv1jor/15/pricing (I made this in 5 minutes, just an example). Easy to design, easy to buy, easy to get word out in the community. Also free marketing for people seeing the shirt and being curious as to what nerd.nu is.

- Streaming/YouTube: We have tons of games going on at any moment, why not put these out there? Streaming is pretty easy to set up, and is a good way to get the nerd.nu tag out there. Streaming events from player perspectives, the Civ matches players put on here, CS:GO, smash, anything we play. People seemed to enjoy the short lets play DementedM0nkey and I did, why not build off of that. Record S areans, events, show off cities, create trailers for hype things like donation drives, there are tons of possibilities in this relatively new market. If we get consistent, twitch sub buttons+profit from youtube could be something else being brought in.

- A nerd.nu tag: I'm pretty sure I saw this posted somewhere and I thought it was a cool idea. Why not have a tag? I would have no problems wearing the tag when entering smash tournaments [nerd.nu | dizney]. Even just bringing one person here through wondering what nerd.nu is is one more person we didn't have before.

- A nerd.nu "team": Now I don't know a whole lot about e-sports aside from smash, but why not have a nerd.nu "team"? As far as I know we have a ton of CS:GO players, we could probably make a pretty strong team (or not, idk how good these players are lel). I wish I knew more about other games, but I know smash it would be just simply wearing the tag like I had above. It makes people wonder what nerd.nu is, and free publicity is wonderful. I'm not saying try to become TSM or Cloud 9 (those are good e-sports teams right) but we can start something to build off of.

These are just some ideas I was throwing around in my head in the shower because I think of ideas in the shower. Think you're too cool to think of ideas in the shower? Well you're not. You're never too cool to think of ideas in the shower.

You beat me to it diz, I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Glad you did though, because you worded it much better than I would have.

Not much to add, because your points covered everything I had considered. Apart form the t-shirt thing. Didnt think of something like that, probably because I wasnt thinking in the shower.

Yeah dizney I was a fan of your lets play on survival. Recording arenas is a great idea as well; as we had Unce and Abiuv record them, but not anymore. I would open up a YouTube channel and do a nerd.nu lets play; but I dont have recording software and my computer has limitations. Advertising our servers basically on YouTube will get us more players as well.

Also the link you gave on teespring, it showed a tagless shirt. Idk if you meant it like that, but I was just wondering. Sorry for catching on late if it was intended like that.

I know i would wear the shit out of a nerd.nu t-shirt.

If we do make one, we should make a forum contest where you wear the shirt infront of something cool like a monument or a landscape and take a picture. Think a google image war but with people wearing the shirts!

(also what spreads faster then social media trends)

Hmm so it seems you can only view your own t-shirt designs based on JK not being able to view mine and me not being able to view Difficults. Not sure how to get around this, but just imagine a black shirt with the nu glasses on the chest. That was basically it :-)

Ok now that I have gotten over T-Shirt Fever...

Competitive games.

I think streaming is a great idea for competitions. Everything from CS:GO to Civ V people watch on twitch all the time. If we can set up maybe a rough time that competitions could be hosted every month or so (depending on peoples schedules) We could build a decent following on twitch and they will want to join in the fun.

Youtube.

Youtube community content should maybe be a centralized Nerd.nu Gaming Community page. I believe there is one already but not by that name. Spleef matches, events, and people playing the servers who upload videos (that are entertaining) should all be funneled into the main channel. A nice centralized place is good to build up the community on the youtube front.

Im not fully aware of ALL the advertisements, but i haven't seen many. I know there is a server voting list where people vote for servers to advance them, but i feel more can be done. I personally don't have any bright ideas other then the streamed or recorded content, so add your input guys and gals.

t-shirts/other random merc might be the best fundraising idea I've heard on here.

We defo need to get a group stream going, perhaps biweekly on a Sat-Sun, get a load of people in a mumble channel playing things and talking crap, we could generate some interesting content with a varying cast of regulars through the day, then chop the best stuff up into a 5-10 min vid and put it on the tube. A source of free advertising and possibly revenues.

Just piggybacking on the building of the nerd.nu community basis, and im sure its been suggested before, but we could host other game servers.  I don't know how expensive it is or anything about it really, but i know we have people who play CS and TF2. A Gmod server might be nice and we could run a few different gamemodes.

So, I already have a "Main" nerd.nu gaming community channel which would be for server based stuff like modding tutorials, world edit type tutorials, other content that people might like to see, etc. I was thinking of doing another one that would be community submitted videos.

This would be wonderful. In addition to this, videos could be created for moderator training that were private only for moderators/admins to view. This would save time on training, and give a reference for players to look back at if they don't remember how to do something. Though this might not be the place to discuss that.

I'd dig a minimalist shirt with only the nu glasses logo. Also, I think that we can put all the videos on one youtube channel - it's not like we're swamped with them now.

I agree, a small nerd glasses logo with nerd.nu underneath would be really cool and basic imo. And I agree with one channel, we can separate things through playlists. I think if players knew that we can submit content for uploads, we'd have a lot more content being created here in the community. Although I think there would need to be set standards on what gets in. Maybe something like submitted content have to be in some kind genre:

- Montage/Highlight Video

- Tutorial Video

- Event Video

- Lets play (I think this should be a succesion thing if implemented though. For example, an S Lets play would one day be recorded and submitted by me, while the next upload for it might be from rtr. That way we don't have every player trying to create a lets play while also being interesting in the variety that the players see from different perspectives).

- Other

All great ideas, we just need to now go through with them. (The tricky part)

I agree, hopefully we can see some of these become a reality!

Don't split the channels that'll just diffuse and confuse viewers. We're lucky if someone stumbles across one channel and we have to give the best impression of the rate and variety of content production on it.

I like the idea of one channel for all videos to be added. We could just put an approapriate tag in the name for each video [Tutorial], [Event], [submission], [upcoming] (as examples).

Don't forget "lets plays"

If we were going to do t-shirts I would like to see something more subtle. I would probably (maybe?) wear this around campus, I wouldn't wear anything directly minecraft related.
