  1. Special thanks to Magnyus for the awesome idea for modifying the glasses to incorporate the "nu"!
  2. Here's a past example of this sort of server description: http://redd.it/2tmwev
  3. Hi Aypop. To be frank, I'm disappointed in your lack of judgement in this. Remember that as a mod, you are held to a higher standard. Seeing as it's been a month, I've removed the ban. Make sure nothing of this nature ever happens again.
  4. So as suggested and promoted by various people, I've written a draft of rules-at-a-glance that would complement the full (and true) ruleset. This would be helpful for the casual player and aims for very swift readability while still conveying the intent of the rules. The rules-at-a-glance would also have hyperlinks to elaborations in the full rules, or even better, subsection expansions for each bullet point here. I think the complete ruleset (and dispersed policies) also needs a full review and consolidation, but that is a bit more monumental task. Please let me know your suggestions or thoughts here. 5. Apologies mumber, I was trying to be concise, not flippant. I'd characterize the word homophobia in a similar manner as 'decimate' - the original (root and coined) meaning reducing by one-tenth, but has adopted a colloquial definition over time. This comparison is not without disparities in coining, timing, and usage, but imo this is all primarily an academic argument that is avoided with your original language. I am not quite so well-read in academic background on the subject, so thank you for the journal article. 'Sexual prejudice' as promoted therein would work fine too, if only to preempt the wandering arguments about the -phobia suffix's applicability in ban appeals, but I like best a tweaked version of the original - "No bigotry or intolerance of others, including that based on ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, or religion."
  6. A rules overhaul in general would be quite welcome - I got started on one but got stalled and set it aside for some time. I especially agree with the short-form / long-form rules concept. To address your three issues, 'hate speech' was intended to cover everything not listed, the subject of homophobia labeled as a misnomer is an etymological fallacy (the word has widespread acceptance in this conventional usage - the greek roots matter less than the word's actual usage in a living language), and the third is absolutely an issue that I think requires robust moderator training in handling of less clear-cut chat content. This is something that can be rolled into the standard training package and incorporated into mod reference materials, to get everyone on the same page and reduce variation in application. I am also in favor of only moderating pejorative language / hate speech, not a blanket ban.
  7. I'd be fine with subreddit flair. The new website overhaul will also have personal pages perfect for these sorts of awards, iirc.
  8. This has been my understanding of the rule as well for as long as I've been here. Preventing someone from non-pejoratively using words like "gay", "jew", etc. is tantamount to whitewashing and suppressing the idea that said groups exist. The solution is straightforward - no to pejoratives, slurs, or trolling; yes to use as identifiers and in mature discussion. This of course brings staff interpretation/judgement into the picture, but as Narissis said, it's the best avenue, and problems with false positives can be mitigated by talking to the head admins if one occurs so we can go over it and talk with the staff in question to help adjust their contextual interpretation.

  10. The only time I have ever seen this word in a context other than "hee hee look at this word that isn't a racist slur but sounds and looks like it" (or a meta discussion) was in an essay from the mid 19th century. Its serious use as defined is rare enough to place it in the ranks of words such as 'abalienate' and 'coney-catcher'. 99% of those who use this word today just do so to troll people and snicker at their middle-school wit. There are however other words of a similar bent that aren't quite so archaic, and as always these should be moderated with an ear for context - their use in a serious, descriptive sense is fine, but their use for trolling is not.
  11. Limit was already at 15, bumped it up to 30 to give a little more wiggle room.
  12. Your original post was a public accusation, which we have specific rules against. Don't do that. However, these are serious accusations, so instead of making unsubstantiated public declarations, simply forward the evidence you claim to have to the head admins so we can actually address this. You can't just neglect to report something and then go on about conspiracies and coverups.
  13. Seems this is a bug with vanilla minecraft: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-53439
  14. Oh man, sign me up for some civ! Steam name should be same as here.
  15. Note the modifiers indicating a measured and deliberate response, and under only some conditions. The word "willing" also implies consent from the player, i.e. not coerced if they "refuse to comply". Once again, this is not a problem to brood over - no need to make mountains out of molehills. Naturally every instance gets looked at case-by-case, but the general case was requested explained.
  16. This is a good accounting of how I view the topic. To expand a bit, if someone legitimately joins the servers with an absolutely coincidental name that closely resembles someone else's, I might ask them if they're willing to change it (in the particular case if it is easily confused with a mods' name) but would certainly not merely ban them out of the blue. This sort of fortuitous event has exceptionally low chances of happening though, so I wouldn't lose too much sleep worrying about it.
  17. No. It's still relevant to attest to a long-standing pattern of behavior. You were already told to stop making appeals; I'm being nice and just warning you again to stop spamming them.
  18. As per this thread, you will not be unbanned. Find another community.
  19. Since the previous reply, you have continued the harassment of a player, repeatedly doxxed an admin, and spammed numerous racist comments across the forums. You will not be unbanned - find another community.
  20. I agree with buzzie. Giving this a specific mention in the rules is worth it, but in the meanwhile it is still covered more generally under harassment, and I will be treating it as such.
  21. Seeing as it's been quite a long time, I've gone ahead and unbanned you. Make sure to take a look over the rules, and welcome back! Ban information: Ban for nocturnalmonkey on c.nerd.nu for mass griefing on S nerd.nu/appeal by ludeman84 on 2012-05-06T13:26:01 (1 more bans, no notes)

You will not be unbanned and are no longer welcome in this community.
