Deaygo
There has been some interest from the community to expand out from just running minecraft servers. A more general poll was created by @Barlimore here, but we would like to know what kinds of games you would like to see run in an official role by NerdNu. It would be preferred to run servers that have the ability to support large number of people so that a bunch of people could enjoy playing at once, this is not to say that other types of games that don't have this kind of server would be rejected. We would like to hear about the games that people would like to see hosted, and after a week or so I will close this thread and open up a vote and go with the top couple games and move forward from there. Following that, we will need to raise some money as a starter to setup another box that will be used to run these servers.I would ask that everything be kept civil in this thread, no bashing other people's suggestions. -- Deaygo
tobylane
Team Fortress Two. It's one of the most popular games when I look at the members list of the official and unofficial groups. It has constant updates and cross platform multiplayer. It's free, hosts 32 people in a game, has its own voice system and voting/commands. I would prefer there to be one nerd tf2 server that rotates through different types of servers - eg Monday 24h dustbowl, Tues-Thur steam maps, Fri event/holiday maps, Sat-Sun custom maps. edit: The game has a good system for the players voting for a map, and there's an alternative. I'd back them too. Edited December 18, 2014 by tobylane
tactical_spork
I second Team Fortress 2. F2P, works for PC Mac and Linux, low system requirements, and to be frank far less potential for drama than Trouble in Terrorist Town, which is probably going to be another leading candidate. I'd personally like fast (5-10 second) spawns with a few popular maps in rotation such as dustbowl, hightower, harvest, badwater, nucleus, and of course, for Socarch26, turbine. I must disagree with Toby in that instead of having set 24 hour blocks of maps it'd be better if people could just vote on the maps they'd prefer.

ultrahub
Games I would play here would be: Team Fortress 2- For reasons stated above, I also enjoy this game, despite sucking at it. Unturned- A cool little free to play game that is like a cross between DayZ and Minecraft. We would probably be better off going with just DayZ or an Arma mod, but for a free game this one fills that open world survival niche pretty well in my opinion. Maps are a bit small from last I played, so not sure how it would work out there, but hey, the game is free and fairly low-end friendly. The Hidden- Basically one player gets to be a semi-invisible monster while the other players are a spec op team hunting it down. This game is also free, though it requires downloading the source engine from steam for it to run. This game is pretty fun from my experience with it, I'm sure some of you have seen some youtubers play it a while back when it was gaining popularity. Not sure how it would run on low-end systems however. Gmod- I don't know anything about the drama that took place, but Gmod is awesome. The amount of variety in game modes alone makes it worth considering in my opinion. There's a few others I would like to see such as Space Engineers(minecraft in space!) or Mount and Blade Warband(good old medieval murder), but I doubt we have enough people who would be interested in those.
Socarch26
I'm a fan of a TF2 server as well as maybe a TTT server. There are also plenty of other games we play, but I reckon those two are the two hardest to find empty and good servers for.
SwitchViewz
TF2 seems to be pretty popular among the community and played often by lots of people. I'm on board for a TF2 Server. TTT is also pretty popular but seems to have died down recently. Not sure if this is related but I know during the general nerd.nu meeting minigames for minecraft seemed pretty popular. I'm not sure what the status on that is but it seems to have died out, might be good to discuss that here or in another thread.
S_W
TF2 would be cool but we'd need community input on what type of server. For instance, I'm a big fan of 24/7 2fort fast respawn servers. Someone above mentioned rotating between different styles which would be pretty cool as well. Also a stat tracker is always fun as long as it doesn't interfere with gameplay or give you unfair advantages. If we decide to do a gmod server, then I can help with any development for it as I have about 7 years of experience doing coding for gamemodes and addons. I'd also be willing to fix up the classic gmod Fortwars gamemode and let nerd host it as I was the lead developer on that for quite a long time. I have no strong opinions on other servers though.
dizney07
I also think a Rust would be amazing. I think it's an easy transition from Minecraft.
SkrapssparkS
online chess http://www.chess.com/ . Okay maybe not but I would like to see TF2 become a part of nerd, also gary's mod. Edited December 18, 2014 by SkrapssparkS
d3north
A rotating Gmod server might be cool, switching from Sandbox for most of the day, to DarkRP, and even to TTT when people want to play. TF2, I wouldnt be against, as long as it had complete stock rotation. (muh tc_hydro) Killing Floor would be a good one too, or Just Cause 2. Starbound is recieving an update soon that includes improved netcode, along with piles of other things as well. This would be my personal choice. I know Civ 5 has a dedicated server feature, so that could be a background process for whenever a group wants to play without fearing unreliable internet. Unturned isnt the best choice, the netcode is bad and it is very very CPU intensive, so a 16 person server requires a beast of a machine to run smoothly. Rust has died from a development point, and is still rather expensive for most people.
saberfysh
I have encountered a number of players who also play League of Legends on the side. Since the game is popular and a lot of third-party sites like LOLnexus already keep extensive player records and statistics, no special organization would be required for nerdnu other than maintaining a list of people who actively play, so other players can simply invite others to games or friend request each other for something more permanent. Seeing as you can start a public chat I've created a nerd.nu league group chat. If you want to join it all you have to do is go to group chats and click the + arrow and type in Nerd.nu. This would be the easiest way to find people online from the community and play with them.
forty_two
While the whole Bukkit DCMA/Microsoft acquisition drama was happening a while back I had a play around with some Minecraft alternatives, I found Minetest was relatively interesting (the base game was rather reminiscent of early Alpha Minecraft, and there's a large amount of server/client mods for it using the built-in Lua scripting). Given that it's free and open source (and less resource-demanding than Minecraft) it could be an interesting experiment, even though I wouldn't expect hordes of people flocking to play. gdavison
I'm really happy that you guys have decided to go this route! I wanted to just throw in my 2c to say I think we should lean toward operating "community building" type games in the same vein as Minecraft. Not that we couldn't operate other games, but I doubt that we'd ever have the same community here if this had been the "reddit public TF2 servers" or something like that. It's the co-operative nature in (parts of) the game that brings out the type of community that we want to foster here, and so I'd lean toward providing something like Starbound or rust servers -- although I think rust servers are something that only a few select organizations can host? Flumper
I'd rather see a new Minecraft server for something like Hunger Games, or Skyblock, or any of the other popular modded game types. :)
Aeoxic
Something that seriously needs to be considered with all of this is location. Specifically, how that will affect latency. Minecraft is good in that both it's not huge on reaction times, and the netcode is average enough to penalise even players next door from the datacenter. First-person shooter games such as TF2, CS:GO, and to an extent Rust definitely require a lower latency. I can't play TF2 with a latency above 80ms, so playing on an American server is absolutely a no-go for me. I imagine it'd be the same degraded experience for anybody outside of the USA. I think rust servers are something that only a few select organizations can host? This has changed semi recently. The current version of the game (that is, development - the other version is now considered "legacy", not "stable") has a server binary that is usable by anybody. djt832
Rust has died from a development point, and is still rather expensive for most people. I'm really not sure why you think it has died from a developmental point. Its been changed a lot recently, and there are still more things to come. Also, its cheaper to purchase than minecraft. This has changed semi recently. The current version of the game (that is, development - the other version is now considered "legacy", not "stable") has a server binary that is usable by anybody. Aeoxic is correct, anyone is now able to host a rust server. I think rust would be a good choice, its gameplay might attract some of the older members back to the nerd community. Its also a developing game, so it'd be nice to jump on it while its gaining popularity.
EeHee2000
I'd love me some Rust, it has a lot of potential - measurable to TF2's possible success, which is why I feel server for both of these games would be excellent.
